This was a wonderful program for my children, until an instructor’s actions made my children no longer want to attend. We had two deaths in our family during the time our children were enrolled in Jeydon’s drum roots class. Both of our children missed class for travel to the funerals and for grieving. They still attended all other classes and were so excited to perform together. We were sent an email by Jeydon announcing the drum roots class performance date and groups that the children would take the stage in. This email was sent the week of the performance. Our children were listed and grouped like the others for the performance. The day of the performance, they put their YMP shirts on and we went to YMP with our family to see their performance. When they met with Jeydon, they were told by Jeydon “I’m sorry guys but you don’t get to perform. Hey, at least you got your t-shirts!” And Jeydon sent them away. Both children came into the concert space to find us and were hysterically crying. They told us everything and I went downstairs to find out what was happening and why they could not perform. Susan, the director, then told me that they would not be allowed to perform and she was not willing to listen to my concerns about the situation. She was unkind, cold and unwilling to find a resolution. This resulted in me asking for the contact information for the board, to which she would not provide. I was furious and very upset, and told them that this was inexcusable and that the reasons for their missed classes were out of their control. People died and we can’t control when that happens. The assistant manager came out (I forget his name) and he had a much more human approach and listened to me and apologized profusely. At that point the damage had been done and my kids were still sobbing on the sidewalk and said they never wanted to come back to YMP again. We left and went home and sent all of our other family members who came to see the performance home too. I did receive an email from Susan after this happened with an apology from her on how she handled her role in this issue. The kids received a card from Jeydon that was not very sincere or apologetic. YMP needs to do better. My kids loved YMP and both of my kids looked up to Jeydon. They suffered two family deaths in a short span, which was traumatic enough. Then, the place they loved and the instructor they adored made that trauma way worse. My kids don’t take music classes anymore, they are afraid they’ll be excluded again. YMP needs to hold their instructors accountable, the director needs training in compassion and communication and the board needs to be aware of this situation. I share this in hopes that another family isn’t treated this way. I share this for our family to heal and to move forward from this experience. I share this as an effort for YMP to improve their processes and learn to not stifle the music that children make. Thank you.

Youth Music Project is a nonprofit and their hearts are 100% in the right place. I love that they offer low/no-cost lessons for underserved community members. They offer our kids lessons in any instrument and, given the current pandemic situation, they've made it easy to do the lessons virtually. I'm looking forward to getting my kids in the concert performances to boost their confidence!
