YMCA Camp Evergreen - listed here under its former name, YMCA Day Camp Iroquois - is the YMCA of Central New York's day camp on 58 wooded acres in Manlius, which the Y describes as the nation's oldest continuously operated day camp, running since 1933. Campers move through six activity periods a day drawn from archery, canoeing and boating on Evergreen Lake, hiking, ecology, survival skills, sports, arts and crafts, swimming in the lake or the pool, and Y-Arts drama, singing and improv. The published daily schedule runs from 8:45am drop-off to 4:30pm pick-up, with extended care available from 7:00am and until 6:00pm, and buses run from stops around Greater Syracuse. The camp is accredited by the American Camp Association, and scholarships are available through the camp director.

★Richard AnthonyI noticed most of the reviews are from several years ago. Which should be a concern as this camp strongly indicates that they are inclusive, but that is not true. They do not have the skillset or the staff to be inclusive. We were told by the director that they would try a number of strategies to help, but there was not evidence of this. It was all lipservice. If you have a child that is not mainstream, do not pay the money for this camp.

★★Jorja ShafferSo I really enjoyed myself at camp when I was young, but that’s because I was to young to notice some of their inconsistencies. The lake that we swim in is filled with bacteria to a point when campers weren’t even allowed to swim in it. When I was in the oldest age group is when I figured out that some of the counselors were more than likely hungover at some points. One time when I was climbing on the rock wall my counselor actually dropped me in midair but thankfully caught me before I crashed. Needless to say my experience has been rather iffy.

If you attend Camp Iroquois, I can assure you that you will have the experience of a lifetime, especially as you return summer after summer, and then hope to continue your journey as staff.
