Awesome campus amd fantastic staff! I went here on a field trip with the Y from LS and although we didnt get to do any of the big things, the hike, the cooperation game, and the creek were awesome activities. Can't say enough about that scenery, a must go for kid's during summer camp.

As a camper for 6 years every day, year and week I've been at Shand were very special to me. I started camp at age 10. At first I was shy like always, until I met the staff and campers I shared my experiences with. Now I'm 16 and I have such a close relationship with everyone there. I got to do a lot activities, eat great food and made so many friends. And what is even more fun and exciting about the camp is that every week they have a new theme every week! And here's the thing parents need to know... Your child will only grow if you put them out there and make them feel free and happy. So, I suggest that if you have a child that doesn't have much to do for the summer you should really take him or her to camp! :)

Camp Shand is an amazing camp with awesome/caring staff. My son went there for the first time the summer after Kindergarten. He had been severely bullied and we were desperate for anything that would bring him out of his shell - the summer he spent there changed his life for the better. This summer will be his 6th year going there. This will be his younger sister's 4th year there,. My son is unable to attend most day camps because they camper to counselor ratio is way too high. Camp Shand keeps a small camper/counselor ratio. They are willing and able to accommodate all of the needs of our children with enthusiasm.

Never sending my child here again! Last summer, they allowed him to run around in sandals that caused severe blistering (9 deep blisters and several smaller) when his shoes shrank from getting wet in the river. Instead of calling home for a solution, they told him to suck it up and treated him like his complaints were the problem. We're not talking a few superficial blisters but feet covered in bleeding, oozing, blisters. When confronted, the director and counselor apologized to me and my son, issuing a refund as acknowledgment of their failure to provide adequate care. This year, they assured me he'd be in better care. So, after making a special trip to deliver his daily allergy medicine before his father delivered him to camp the following Sunday, they didn't give it to him except once after he presented signs of illness at the tail end of his three week stay. When I picked him up, he was sick, all but one of his allergy pills were in the bag returned to me, and he was sun burned. Turns out, the two bottles of sun screen I sent with my 9 year old hadn't even been opened. What 9 year old takes the initiative to put on sun screen without direction? What camp allows it's campers to run around exposed to the sun with no protection? Who ignores the hoarse voice of a coughing 9 year old complaining of not feeling well and denies him a call home? And, if that's not enough for me to say "never again, Camp Shand", allow me to share the punching in the face incident. On the day of pick up, there was a call home to inform us our son had been punched in the face by another child, that his face was numb but a doctor had informed them it was not concerning, and that our child handled it well. Turns out, the incident had happened days prior, my son was not seen by a physician and, even though he asked to call home because he wasn't feeling well, he was told to write a letter. My son generally likes Camp Shand and has always looked forward to going. He is widely known by name and well liked. Unfortunately, he is not safe in the care of those who run the daily operations of the camp. In all fairness, most of the responsibility for campers rests on very young adults with little to no real child care experience or training. It is a shame the professionals responsible for directing the camp lack the necessary skills and/or desire to actually direct the camp. After all, the best way to teach Respect, Responsibility, Honesty and Caring is through example. Never again, Camp Shand!
