This organization could use a complete overhaul of staff and leadership. Everyone is rude, there is no communication, and if you question anything they will double down and become completely defensive. They ignore your concerns, like coaches swearing at each other across the field during a 1st grade game, or your team not having enough kids to sub anyone, ever. This is the only kids league in the area that will not let you have a buddy request which can be so upsetting for young children who are placed on a team with no one they know, and this being their very first experience with the sport. They will argue though that it’s good for the kids. They are completely out of touch. There are many more leagues in the area that run much better and treat the children, coaches and parents with kindness and genuinely want the children to have a positive experience. This is not one of them.

TYSL: A True Community Gem I recently had the pleasure of meeting Gabriel and Liam from the Troy Youth Soccer League (Recreational Soccer League) and shared a heartfelt review with them in person. I also promised to write an online review—and here it is. TYSL has been more than just a soccer league for my family—it’s been a foundation. My son started his soccer journey with TYSL seven years ago, learning the basics and developing a real love for the sport. That early spark, thanks to the care and dedication of TYSL’s coaches, mentors, and staff, set him firmly on the path toward competitive soccer. As someone previously noted, the affordability at TYSL is truly remarkable. But beyond cost, what really stands out is the lasting impact this club has had on its players. Over the years, TYSL has helped develop a strong group of varsity and junior varsity athletes, which is a proof of the league’s quality instruction and long-term player development. While I served as an assistant coach and have recommended many children to join the league, I’ve come to deeply appreciate its value. The sense of community is real—friendly families, committed staff, and volunteers who genuinely care. Sure, communication can occasionally be a little tricky, but that’s a minor note in a much bigger picture. Honestly, I’m surprised to see some of the negative reviews. TYSL is a recreational league built for the community, and its success depends on active participation. Rather than complaining from the sidelines, let’s support, encourage, and help it grow stronger together. This isn’t just a soccer program—it’s a place where children grow in skill, spirit, and character.

Having coached for four years and with two children who've played at TYSL, I can confidently say this organization is a gem. Unlike many leagues that prioritize profit or parental ego, TYSL is genuinely focused on the kids, which is exactly how it should be. The affordability is unbelievable – just $300 for the entire year ($150 per season)! Until 5th grade, your child will receive top-notch soccer instruction here, comparable to any league out there. The atmosphere is consistently positive, with friendly parents and engaged referees. While there have been minor instances where the organization seemed a bit rigid in discussions, this is a truly negligible point considering the immense value and positive experience TYSL provides. Highly recommend!

Our experience has been very disappointing. I understand it’s all volunteers, but operations are chaotic, policies change on a whim, then they treat you with malice and disdain for daring to ask for clarification. In my experience, the board have been incredibly rude and unprofessional to parents and volunteer coaches alike. The board is unreachable and the office staff is left to cover for them about their shady practices. I was promised a call back, and after not receiving one, my husband called and was hung up on by their office after presenting them with evidence of the lies we were told. Soccer should be a fun time with friends, not an endless source of drama. My child has been bounced around to 3 different teams in 5 seasons, while other children are given preferential treatment. Save yourself a headache, and play a different league.

If I could rate zero I would. Staff and coaches have almost zero communication with each other so the information you receive is always contradicting the other information you’ve been given. Will wait until last minute to inform you, even though you registered early, your child either doesn’t have a team or a coach. We were told to re register to keep the team together only to be told by the snotty woman on the phone “it doesn’t work like that, I don’t know why the coaches would say that”. How about communicate properly with everyone and stop being so willing to take our money for cheap material socks that rip instantly and sign up fees only to be told “to bad” pretty much.
