Our homeschool book club kids and moms went sailing on Boerne Lake to coincide with some sailing books we had read and it was an excellent experience! Captain Chapa is the perfect mix of taking his job seriously and putting safety first while making it fun, enjoyable, and relaxing for the whole crew. And he's crazy smart and interesting. ★★★★★Don GreenI took my scout troop for a day of training (Trisum offers certification in the Small Boat Sailing merit badge), not really knowing what to expect. I was absolutely blown away with how good the day was. Not only does Captain Chapa clearly know his seamanship, but he is very good at imparting that knowledge to young people. The day started in the "schoolhouse" (picnic tables and a whiteboard set up near the lake), explaining tacks, jibes, etc. to the scouts, keeping them engaged and learning. Then he took us out on the water, 5 or so at a time, so the scouts could get used to handling lines and the tiller. After lunch, a little more class time to explain some of the experiences the scouts had had on the boat; plus knot tying and the merit badge exam. The day wrapped up with the scouts demonstrating they could right a capsized boat (one of the badge requirements) so two scouts at a time took a boat out (Captain Chapa and I followed in a chase boat) and practiced their tacks & jibes, then capsized the boat and demonstrated righting it, climbing in, and getting moving again. It was a very full day; we started at about 9 and wrapped up at about 5 (there were 7 students plus one adult leader). tl;dr We had a fantastic time; the value for the cost was also unbelievable, and Captain Chapa is an engaging sailor and instructor. I plan to offer this opportunity to scouts in the future who didn't get to attend, and will sign my family up for private lessons if they are interested.
