Professional theatre company in Aspen whose education arm runs summer camps for students in grades K-12 from early June through early August at the Hurst Theatre. Elementary weeks are themed skill camps mixing creative drama, design, comedy, music, dance and outdoor team time with a morning snack break and an hour-long lunch and recess; older students can join the five-week Summer Youth Musical for grades 4-7, which is fully produced on the Hurst stage, or high-school intensives such as a pop-rock cabaret. Camp themes range from puppetry to K-pop.

★★★★★beth ellyn rosenthalI have loved musical theater since my father drove the family from Chicago to New York City in 1966 to see Gwen Verdon in Sweet Charity on Broadway. So when I saw Theatre Aspen was doing Guys and Dolls as part of its summer musical season, I had to go. The production was as good as any community theater show. But the setting. OMG. The theater is on the edge of the John Denver Sanctuary on the banks of the Roaring Fork River. The aspens and pines soar over the patio. Mother Nature at her most dramatic! Often the company brings in national talent. Last month I saw Len Cariou in "Tuesdays with Morrie." The house only has 199 seats so everyone is up close. I could see every facial emotion on this amazing actor's face. Can't do that in a big theater. Currently the theater is an unheated tent. In the old days the staff handed out blankets in the fall chill. (no more.) Last year the theater proposed to build a permanent structure on the site. Will it lose it's charm? The covered vestibule often serves as a stage for FREE high school productions. There is a concession stand for comestibles. The bathrooms are around the corner in Rio Grande Park. They are really kewl because everything is environmentally conscious. Check out the sinks! The theater itself is a five minute walk from the street. The staff has a cart and will transport you if you don't want to go on foot. Aspen is allergic to street lights, so bring a flashlight if you want to walk home.

Incredible Mountain views, ponds and rock trails leading through all. To top it off you have a covered Amphitheater for the band, booze and food.
