Music Center of the Northwest is a nonprofit community music school in North Seattle whose summer camps include a String Summer Music Camp (June 22-26, 9:00am-3:00pm, $450) for students at Suzuki Book 1 Minuet 1 or later on violin and viola or Rigadoon or later on cello, a Rhythm Kids drumming, singing, dancing and music-games camp (July 20-24, 12:30pm-4:00pm, $295), and a Midsummer Low Brass Music Intensive for middle and high school brass players (July 28-31, 10:30am-2:30pm, $425). The school states its mission is to create musical experiences for people of all ages and abilities regardless of financial means, and it runs the Janice Gockel Scholarship Fund for tuition assistance. It also offers Music Together early-childhood classes and year-round lessons.

Besides having great teachers who are gentle and encouraging, there are also weekly group classes that give students a chance to practice together. These have helped our son not feel isolated in his learning, and has helped him get used to playing with others as a group. There are also frequent performance opportunities here, both solo as well as with the group. The group holiday performances are especially fun! This was one of the only programs we found that gives younger kids a chance to learn an instrument (our son started around 3). My impression is that though progress may be slower at younger ages, early exposure helped our son get accustomed to practice and being on stage, and it can be fun when music becomes a family activity. The Bravo Summer Camps have also been rewarding for our son, and have become a regular Summer program for him. We've been here for several years now and have been consistently impressed with the quality and care in instruction. We feel very lucky to have found MCNW!
