Kinhaven Music School

I love this place. I attended their Senior Session (Summer session for high school students) last year ('25) and am returning this year ('26). I found the faculty to be amazing, and 95% of the peers to be some of the nicest people I have ever met. (The other 5% I could still get along with). I am aware that not every student had the same experience as I did, but I think I might be one of the odd ones that cherished this place. There are weird traditions for sure, but it's something that I cherish, and cannot wait to return to. There are two cons from last year, and it was, (for the first two weeks) most of the kitchen faculty (but that was eventually ironed out), and the medical facilities. For medical facilities, I had a better experience than most other people. However, from what other people told me, they went up to the health office, and the one nurse Kinhaven had wasn't in the office, even though it was during office hours. Sometimes during the bedtime branch of med pass hours, they would be sleeping, and I don't know if that comes from a lack of communication on what's happening each night or what. I'm aware that these cons are even things that the faculty and directors weren't wanting to worry about. Of course, nothing can be perfect. I just thought I'd relay my experice. For the tuition aspect, they give really good financial aid, but even then it can be hard to make it affordable for families. I think it's worth saving money over time for however. I would recommend that if people are looking for an extensive music camp to attend for a summer, I would suggest doing Kinhaven at least once, and see how you like it. If you just really enjoy listening to live chamber music, and you live in the Weston area, I would suggest attending some of the concerts that Kinhaven offers between the beginning of June, to the end of December. All of the concerts are free.

I went here when I was 16. I was treated differently because of being a brown/black Latin person. Other students would steal my things then the camp staff would say “are you sure it’s not because of your background that you come from that you’re paranoid crime is happening to you here?” I was from the rich suburb of Naples, Florida. Please tell me what they meant by that… oh that I was from some sort of project just because of the color of my skin/ being Latino? I was never treated with respect or dignity by staff or students and if you’re not white or Asian wouldn’t recommend going here, or sending your children of color here. Mind you I’m now 28 and still felt compelled to leave this review because I realize that if I don’t say something it’ll go unknown. I think of my experience everytime I recommend programs to other parents.

I first attended Kinhaven in 1993 and 1994 as a camper, and my love for it has only grown since then! My mom and I have been attending the Adult Chamber Music Workshop for more than 20 years, and some of the same faculty are still there from my days as a camper. Almost anyone who talks about this place uses the word "magic" in their description, which is related to the rural beauty, the welcoming non-competitive community, and of course the MUSIC!

I fell in love with Kinhaven my first summer there, which left me going back for two more summers. I am so grateful for the high caliber of music I was exposed to there, the incredible faculty and staff, and community you can find there. It is unlike any other summer program I have been lucky enough to attend - everyone is there to support you and wants you to succeed. A six week retreat from my phone in the rolling hills of rural Vermont - truly a gem of music school.
