Disappointing experience tonight at the Jefferson City YMCA. My sister was trying weightlifting for the very first time and got on the assisted pull-up machine. She wasn't able to complete the movement, and when she stepped off, the weight stack came down a little harder than expected something that happens to plenty of beginners learning a new machine. Instead of using it as a teaching moment, The staff Donna came over and told her that if she can't do the machine, she should just stay off of it and said this in front of other members. No offer to demonstrate how to use it properly, no tip on adjusting the assist weight, no encouragement. Just shamed her and walked away. The whole point of a community gym like the Y is to be a welcoming place for people of all fitness levels, especially beginners. Staff should be coaching and supporting new members, not embarrassing them for trying. My sister left feeling humiliated for doing the exact thing the YMCA is supposed to encourage showing up and trying. This kind of interaction is how you lose members before they ever get started. The Y can and should do better.

YMCA staff member Patrick was extremely rude wore my crocs dude to having a lot of swelling and not being able to wear tennis shoes.Instead of telling me I couldn’t wear them and asking me to leave, he come up me in a very rude and aggressive way with a sign and shoves it in my face. Telling me I had to leave and couldn’t wear those shoes. So embarrassing in front of everyone. I then call Health & Wellness Director to talk to her about the situation and how her employee treated me and she told me I was in the wrong. Been going to the gym for 5 yrs now and never been treated like this so disappointed with my experience today.

Dear YMCA, I just wanted to say that one of the staff members was disrespectful. We where in the locker room and we were trying to get dressed and one of the staff looked at us and she said “get dressed” in a mean voice which I don’t think they should be looking at us while we are getting dressed.

Dirty. The staff up front is supposed to keep the place clean, they do not. Floors are caked in dust and hair, machines are rusting and people don’t clean the machines after use, most of the time. The locker room has hair everywhere, yuck. Take better care of your facility, please! It’s gross!
