The James Island Recreation Complex, a City of Charleston Recreation Department facility at 1088 Quail Drive, hosts a full-day summer camp for children ages 6-12 running Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Campers do fitness activities, swimming, arts and crafts, games and sports. The complex also runs shorter specialty athletic camps in football, baseball, cheer, dance and gymnastics, and its grounds include ball fields, batting cages, two full basketball courts, an outdoor pool and a gymnastics gym.

★★★★★RTEAbsolutely love the Wings Basketball Academy. My son and his best friend learned so many new skills and really enjoyed the entire program. They did play a few games at the very end of the day which wasn’t specific basketball drills but it was all fun and the best camp they’ve ever attended. They have a new girl up front and she is incredible. We absolutely enjoy everyone at the rec center.
★Carmelina LivingstonThink again before signing up your children for camp, is it worth the money? I signed up my grandson for the summer WINGS basketball Academy, which stated in their summer camps description that they will learn all aspects of basketball from skill drills to play scrimmage. The camp was for 4 half days for the price of $165. (That’s a bit steep since some of our taxes goes to supporting city and county parks.) The first two days they had a basketball head coach and young adult (high school) assistant coach work with the kids doing skill drills and scrimmages, the the last two days of camp, the head coach was not present and my grandson told me that they did do some drills and played scrimmages but most of the time they played games. On the last day of camp, they were supposed to play a scrimmage in front of parents to show what they have learned…that didn’t happen! Instead the parents witnessed the assistant coaches playing red light green light game with the campers! I did not pay that much money for my grandson to play games that I can do in my back yard two of the four days of camp! I paid for my grandson to learn and practice basketball skills! When I confronted my concerns to the staff members, I got no replies, just blank stares! They lost a customer! I will look at other basketball camps elsewhere in the future!
★★★Patrick KingIt's okay. Several baseball fields, a pitching area and a play area for the little ones. There's concession stands, but never noticed them in use. As for fields, all I recall seeing are for baseball/softball. There is a hardened building, but never been in.
★★★★★Charles “KC” HonakerNice community center for the kids. We went for a 5 to 6 year old basketball game. So funny to watch especially if your kid isn't the one playing. I did find it funny that people just parked on the grass with plenty of parking spots available. Must have been a rough day at work that prevented them from walking an extra 10 feet.
