The teachers and staff care and have patience for each learner that comes through the door, the young, the old, the guardians, the friends, and everyone in between. They have created a safe environment where children are treated respectfully, given chances to make mistakes, and given opportunities to learn and grow from those mistakes. They have created a space where diversity, equity, and inclusion aren’t just buzz words, they are practiced and evident in every aspect of learning and living. The staff and teachers recognize that children are smart enough to handle big topics and big conversations. From handling school place violence to gender identity to sex education to ugly parts of history they give kids a place to ask questions and receive appropriate and correct answers. The learners have a place to see community service and living in action. CASA, Feeding SD, Humane Society, community lunches, game nights, and daily chores all provide a way to see how communities should do life together.
