San Francisco Community Music Center (CMC) is a nonprofit offering low- or no-cost music education, including several summer camps for youth in the Mission District. CMC Sparks (ages 8-12, no experience, weekdays 9 a.m.-3 p.m.) introduces piano and guitar with singing and rhythm, while Camp CMC (ages 9-14, requires about two years of study and concurrent private lessons) groups students into ensembles across jazz, Latin, classical, blues, and more. Additional mariachi, musical-theater, jazz, and chamber camps are offered.

I happened upon them while visiting from NYC, in search of a piano to rent for practice. What I found was a beautiful Yamaha concert grand, a lovely concert hall, and a genuinely kind and generous staff. Plus - teens playing and learning jazz in the studio next door! What could be better?
