One-day Kids Civil War History Camp on the fields of the Battle of Cedar Creek, in which children muster into the Army of 1861-65 as Union or Confederate recruits for the day. Recruits receive enlistment papers, are formed into companies and drilled by reenactors of the 8th Virginia Infantry in close order drill, marching and manual of arms, and see cavalry drill from the 18th VA Cavalry and McNeill's Rangers plus artillery demonstrations from McClanahan's Battery. The camp runs 9:00am-3:00pm on a Saturday in June for ages 8-14 at $40 pre-registered ($45 after the deadline or walk-on), capped at 55 recruits, and ends with a Grand Battle at 2:00 that parents are welcome to watch. Campers bring their own bag lunch, sunblock and bug spray; water is provided.

I first came here years ago, and there wasn’t much to see back then, so when I walked in today I was thrilled to see the difference! There are displays with artifacts, a sutler section, a movie, and even a dress up area for kids. (My 10 year old daughter could have stayed in that Civil War dress all day!) The gift shop had a nice variety as well. We love what this is growing into!
