Campgaw Ski School teaches skiing and snowboarding to children at Campgaw Mountain Ski Area in Mahwah, New Jersey, a county-owned hill leased and operated by Ski Campgaw Management LLC. Its multi-week group programs place skiers ages 4 to 6 in Cruisers, taught only on surface lifts by instructors trained to work with young children, and skiers and snowboarders 7 and older in Mountain Masters. Groups sign up through group sales, and the school recommends private lessons for young children ready to ride the chairlift. The beginner-friendly ski area has two chairlifts and a Magic Carpet lift on its bunny hill.

Powered by GoogleTook the family up here, and we had a great time, lift lines moved pretty quickly, runs were fun, it was super close to NYC and parking was easy. Additionally, I'd like to call out Gabriel, the snowboard instructor, he really made our sun feel confident, and it was remarkable how quickly he picked it up under Gabriel's teaching, would highly recommend for beginners getting into the sport! We'll be back!
I had a hard time finding a detailed review of newer date, so here comes. We visited Campgaw Resort over Martin Luther King Day and had a mixed experience as a family with two young kids (ages 3 and 5) who are just learning how to ski. The resort is actually quite well suited for beginners. There are several slopes with very gentle inclines—perfect for children and first-timers. Our kids felt safe and confident on the two Magic Carpet areas, where they could practice and easily ride back up. This setup worked really well for both our three- and five-year-old. The small chairlift to the upper beginner section also offered a bit more excitement while still being manageable for little skiers. Pricing is reasonable for the offering on paper, but kids also pay full price (65$/person on weekends, 55$ for 8.30-4pm). There are a few slightly more challenging runs—from the top of the larger lift you can either take a relatively short but steep descent or go down narrower trails through the trees with a similar gradient. It adds a bit of variety, though the resort is clearly geared toward novice skiers. Unfortunately, Campgaw has converted part of the terrain into a tubing area, which means some former ski slopes now sit unused—covered in snow but not skiable. It feels like wasted space and further limits the experience, especially for those looking for more than just beginner-level terrain. Our biggest frustration was the resort’s operations on a busy day. The queuing system is inefficient. Even though we had purchased lift tickets online, we still had to stand in the same long line as those buying tickets and renting gear on-site. It made for a slow and frustrating start. And once we were finally on the slopes, the two-person chairlift to the beginner area quickly became a major bottleneck, with 30–40 minute wait times for a 1–2 minute run. It felt poorly managed. The webcam showed mostly empty slopes—but that’s only because everyone was stuck in line. There’s a single lodge building with a few lockers, restrooms, and a café split across two levels. The food selection is limited but decent enough for a half-day on the slopes—basic items like fries, burgers, chili, and candy. Everything is pre-made, which helps speed up service, though not necessarily the taste or quality. One downside is the seating situation: the building tends to fill up with parents waiting while their kids take lessons, so turnover is very low and it can be tough to find a place to sit and eat. Bottom line: Campgaw can be a solid choice for families with very young or first-time skiers—but only if you go on a quiet day. On holidays and weekends, the resort is simply too small and under-equipped to handle the crowds. If you’re planning a visit, arrive early, bring your own gear, and avoid peak days if you can.
I had a wonderful first time snow tubing experience. I love the speed I gained and the spinning out at the end. I felt like it was fairly priced! For a holiday weekend I’m pretty impressed there wasn’t much wait time probably around 15 minutes per each go around but many people go in doubles which sped things up fairly quickly. I do wish the whole waiver situation, that took some time. Should at least be done online or at least set up stations with iPads but I didn’t mind the old-fashioned vibes this ski area had. It seems like most people left around 3pm so if you want to avoid the crowds best come for that time. Menu very limited. I would recommend bringing your own food unless you don’t mind eating cold burgers and chicken fingers. Vegans, all they got for you is french fries and jumbo pretzels + Mac n cheese bites, for vegetarians. The staff was very helpful and super friendly. While I was waiting around for snowboard rental, I really appreciated how one employee was very diligent and patient with a customer issue with his skis while also juggling another customer asking assistant to help take his snowboard boot off. Will definitely make another trip here.
Amazing place for beginners and intermediate ski and awesome place for tubing. I have been visiting multiples times each season for the last 15+ yrs. Very kid friendly and excellent staff. Ski coaches are top notch and help in all ways. Took my kid since he was 3yrs and has enjoyed every time, loves to go back every time just like all of us! Restroom are clean and restaurant onsite provides snacks, food and hot beverages.
