YMCA Camp Thunderbird is an overnight camp on nearly two miles of Lake Wylie shoreline, about 30 minutes from Charlotte, operated by the YMCA of Greater Charlotte. Overnight campers ages 7-16 attend one-, two- or four-week sessions running Sunday to Saturday, with each session open to particular ages and, in some weeks, a single gender. Activities center on the lake - wakeboarding, kayaking, paddle boarding - plus challenge courses and horseback riding. The camp also runs a separate day camp for younger children.

Great place to have an amazing time with kids. We went with our 5th graders for 2 days, they love it. Staff is nice, place clean, and everything ready to welcome our kids. The food was great and enough for everyone

Camp Thunderbird not only helped build confidence in my daughter but nurtured her leadership skills. Also gave her a better way of facing new challenges and experiences. The comradery alone gave her a sense of family. Special shout out to Haley and Noah, who always greeted me kindly. Emma, Samantha, Drew and Courage who helped my daughter feel comfortable. Serenity, is an LIT who was so kind to my daughter and is the very reason my daughter wants to be an LIT when she is old enough. And most of all Cat. Cat, extended so much love, kindness and hugs. "Thank you mommy for working hard, that way I could go to such a special camp with such kind people" - my daughter 💖

I have been to Camp Thunderbird, three times for weekend retreats and would overall give it a 3.5. The activities are fun and the grounds are beautiful being right on Lake Wylie. The cabins have heating/air conditioning and full bathrooms, so it is more of a glamping experience. The staff is usually very friendly. The food is nothing to rave about, not the best quality, but the salad and fruit are always fresh so that is a plus. They have a ton of drink options and pretty decent coffee. Some areas of improvement are sometimes the bathrooms in the common areas are a little rough. They always seem to have a lot of staff, but have never been on time or prepared for our campers’ activities. We are always waiting on them to get ready. This last retreat they made one of our counselors act as a lifeguard because they did not have enough, which our counselor was not the most comfortable with. I enjoy the area because of the view and grounds but organization and food could be improved.

[This review is for the open access days for Y members] I was so excited to learn about the free open access for Y members on select Sunday afternoons - it's so wonderful to have another opportunity to get outside on a beautiful day and best of all for FREE (with Y membership). We opted not to pay for any of the optional activities and still found plenty to do over the course of a couple of hours. Archery, in particular, was a treat. I hope these opportunities return in the fall!

Wonderful setting with so many activities to enjoy. The staff were friendly and caring. We did an overnight Y-guides longhouse and had a blast. Based on how well that event was run and experiencing how great the staff are I would absolutely like to send my kids to an overnight camp here.
