January 24th was the first time I personally took my six year old granddaughter to her gymnastics class at Wyoming Valley Gymnastics. She has been attending for a couple of months, but this was the first time I brought her because her mother had something to do. Her father’s fiancée and her mother have taken her previously. There were four little girls in the class that day. My granddaughter is six. One of the other girls was nine, and the other two appeared to be around nine or ten. I am a mother of seven and a grandmother of five, so I fully understand children, group settings, and that kids can sometimes get out of hand. In this case, none of the children were misbehaving. They were not running around, yelling, or doing anything inappropriate. They were very well behaved. The instructor that day was named Haley, likely in her mid to late twenties. Throughout the class, the manner in which she spoke to the children was concerning. She was not always yelling, but she consistently spoke in a very sharp, harsh tone. Think Abby Lee from Dance Moms. On multiple occasions she did yell at the kids when they were simply not doing things correctly. At one point, my granddaughter was having trouble with a back roll. Instead of calmly guiding her, the instructor physically positioned her and rolled her backward in a way that came across as annoyed, as if she was put out by having to help or demonstrate. While this was happening, I messaged my son, his fiancée, and my daughter in law to let them know what I was observing. My daughter in law shared that she had noticed the instructor being short with the children before. She also told me that on another occasion, the instructor had yelled at a little girl in the class who is autistic, which upset her, though she did not say anything at the time. Later in the class, all four girls jumped off a mat. My granddaughter was the last one to do it, and she was yelled at quite harshly. I understand safety is always the priority, i am a safety manager myself, and I agree that unsafe behavior should be corrected. However, none of the other children were addressed, and they were several years older than my granddaughter. The tone was unnecessary. If anybody knows me they know that I am not opposed to correcting or yelling at children, I often find it necessary to get their attention. But the actions have got to match the correction and in these cases it did not. At that point, I went in and addressed the situation directly with the instructor. From then until the end of class, which was about ten more minutes, her demeanor changed and she was pleasant. Because of this experience, my granddaughter will not be continuing at this program. We will be finding a different gymnastics program moving forward. I am sharing this so that other parents and grandparents whose children attend this gym can be aware of this particular instructor and pay attention to how their children are spoken to.

they have a kids club open play during the day. theres nothing to do around here. i met some dads and we will try the open gyms. everyone was nice. was pleanty of parking. we like this place

My 3 year old just started and so far so good. They’re moving facilities the end of this month to plains behind malacaris ice cream so we’re excited about that bc it’s right down the street from our house. Looking forward to my daughters future in gymnastics hopefully this ends up being a long term thing for us ☺️
