Woodleaf - A Young Life Camp

I served as a parent chaperone at Woodleaf several years ago for my daughter’s Christian school retreat. My position was as an “extra” parent lifeguard . I was SHOCKED to learn that the actual main Lifeguard who was hired by Woodleaf had absolutely no idea where the AED was when I asked him. The lake was 30-40 feet deep, and was not clear, so that one could not see the bottom. I learned that there were only 2 AED’s on the property…one near the cafeteria, and one in the medics cabin….more than 5 minutes from the lake. Furthermore, the life vests were almost all in large and extra large sizes, which would not possibly keep the majority of junior high age students afloat if needed. When I shared my thoughts with the 22 year old lifeguard on staff with Younglife for the summer, she naively inquired about the “requirement that all attending students knew how to swim , right?”. She seemed to have forgotten about “unexpected” emergencies and drownings in her training. In addition, the small boat which would serve as necessary if there was indeed an emergency/drowning individual out in the lake, had a leak, and the motor was “unreliable”. I was told that I would need to swim out to an individual if they were drowning. The lake was not small. The very next day, a boy came off the water slide having trouble breathing. The lifeguard on staff with the camp said he was probably winded. I asked him to take off his vest. He had a scar travelling down his chest from open heart surgery 6 mos prior and was later found at the ER to be having cardiac rhythm irregularities. My point? Parents and schools visiting this property should not assume that the students will be safely taken care of near the water. Please ask questions to ensure that the camp is practicing protocols for emergencies.

I’ve been to many camps, and this is one of the most beautiful campsite I’ve ever seen. When you walk into this camp, you’re greeted by this very serene location. The camp has a very beautiful rec field. After that it lead to 2 Basketball Court. Then after that you have an amazing pool. If you continue walking, you’ll see a large pond. Kind of small leak future. There’s two waterslides that go into this week. If you walk around the huge giant swing, and there’s also a high ropes course on the other side of the pond. I’ve heard that there’s fish in the pond too if you’d like to fish. The cabins are very nice. I’m really impressed with my cabinet in the amenities that they have here. The food has been great also. I can’t complain about that. One of the things that makes this place the best is the group that I’m here with. I’m here with a Christian high school from the bay area and they are so loving and so caring.

I went with the Young Life and Young Lives weekend winter camp to help watch the babies in the nursery. The rooms were clean and well equipped. The food was great and the staff was really friendly. The only thing I'd suggest is adding more ramp ways to help get strollers down to the gift shop and to help those with limited mobility.

I went to Woodleaf for a week for the summer camp and it as by far the best week of my life. Every day was so exciting with new surprises and I met so many people and made so many memories. There is so much to do! And everything is so nice like the cabins and the stores and everything about it! I cannot wait to go back next year... If you're thinking about going, I encourage you to do it: you won't regret it one bit!!
