Story County Conservation offers summer nature camps for youth, including half-day sessions held mornings or afternoons and some overnight camps. Campers explore local natural areas through hands-on activities such as investigating creeks and marshes, following maps, and nature art, stories, games, and journaling. Two curricula run each summer (June and July) so children can attend twice.

Beautiful place, however i went there with my partner on 11/22 and found a bunch of burn sign and a still smoldering and smoking log that appeared to have been laying across the trail but burnt until it was on the edge of the trail, we used water from the lake to make sure it was fully put out, however we found multiple other spots with wood/logs still smoldering and smoking, we called 911 so that way better equipped people could ensure everything was fully put out, we learned that they had gotten a call on the 18th about logs smoldering aswell and said it was from a "controlled lumber burn" the conservation team or whoever conducted the burn failed to ensure there were no remaining fire hazards, let alone there still being multiple spots where smoke was being emitted from logs after atleast 4 days since the previous call. This could have easily reignited and caused a devastating wildfire especially when considering all of the dry leaves and dead underbrush that would serve as an accelerant to a fire. Greatly disappointed and just thankful we were able to put out 2 of the still smoldering areas, 1 log and some smaller pieces that we were able to toss into the lake.

Love McFarland Park and the conservation center. Now that the rains have refilled the lake, it's so beautiful. The conservation center has great displays, lots of information, and helpful staff. Story county has so many wonderful parks and green spaces.
