Sandy Creek Day Camp is an outdoor, nature-based day camp run by Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services at Sandy Creek Nature Center and Sandy Creek Park. Weekly sessions run Monday to Friday, 9:00am-4:00pm, and every week includes canoeing, hiking, archery, crafts and outdoor games alongside a changing theme - live reptiles and hands-on science, a cryptozoology mystery week, an 1790s log house and survival skills, a planetarium show, creek walks and a 2.5-mile greenway hike. Separate groups serve ages 7-8, 9-12 and 13-15, with enrolment capped at 50 campers a week (10 for teen camp) and each camper limited to four one-week sessions. Before and after care is available for an extra fee, and families may apply for an ACC Leisure Services scholarship before the day of registration.

★★★★★H Bthis place is my sanctuary. It’s so peaceful, the staff is always helpful but lets you explore on your own, and there are lots of trails & space to walk around. They have accessible trails for people who travel in wheelchairs, there are trails with some hills if you want more of a challenge, and then of course the Greenway is multi use and most trails are easy and flat. I will always love this place very much. The nature center itself is high-quality too – it’s a great place to bring kids and there’s a great playground. It’s always fun to come see the snakes and fish and frogs… I’m sorry to those animals I forgot but I love all of y’all! also, bathrooms are accessible all the time which is a game changer if you’d like to go on long walks.

They also have a boardwalk for wheelchair accessible or people who can't walk trails. Plus the Greenway trail has an entrance here so you can begin the long Greenway trail. Best part is its free. However you can donate to help keep things running. BTW there is lots of cool fish, turtles, frogs and even snakes inside to see.

The visitor center has an education center primarily aimed at children. There is no entry fees and it is a good place for family with kids as well. Overall, a great spot that we will visit again.
★★★★★Rex HoltSandy Creek Nature Center is a wonderful place to get out and experience nature close to the downtown Athens area and the University of Georgia Campus for all ages, abilities and knowledge levels. There is plenty of free parking and activities for the entire family. The Nature Center is located in the triangle formed by the North Oconee River and Sandy Creek at and including the northern terminus of the North Oconee River Greenway. The Greenway at this point is a fairly level paved track suitable for easy walking, hiking, biking, roller blading, and wheelchairs. Vehicular traffic is restricted. This section of the Greenway has been recently (2024-25) re-paved, repainted and refurbished. Several new features have been included for comfort and convenience: additional trash cans and recycling receptacles, pet clean up stations and trail side benches. The signage has also been replaced and significantly upgraded. In addition to the Greenway, the Nature Center has its own well maintained trail system within the park that covers the spectrum of activity levels from wheelchair accessible boardwalks(when wet, the boardwalk can get very slick and slippery in places, so extra caution should be taken) to moderate activity dirt paths. The center hosts numerous free programs and educational opportunities. There are playgrounds, picnic tables, a gift shop and other amenities. The park staff are all friendly, welcoming and ready to help.
