★Shiva KhaliliI’m writing this to inform other families of our experience. My son has never been diagnosed with autism, ADHD, or any neurodevelopmental condition. Despite this, the teacher described him as autistic and raised concerns that felt inappropriate and unsupported. He is a healthy, typical 5-year-old boy — the youngest in the class — who genuinely loves drawing and painting. It was surprising and upsetting to be told he was “not interested,” when art is something he actively enjoys. Rather than offering support or age-appropriate guidance, the communication felt exclusionary, and the situation ultimately resulted in my child no longer being welcomed in the class, even though art classes are often considered a supportive and expressive outlet for young children. The teacher emphasized her experience working with autistic children, yet the approach taken did not feel inclusive or collaborative. Additionally, during many classes, the teacher was frequently absent and the class was led by an inexperienced teenage student, which raised concerns about supervision and quality. This was not a good fit, especially for families seeking inclusivity, flexibility, and thoughtful communication — including those with neurodivergent children.
