We had a great time with OSC. We learned so much about competitive soccer. The mangers coordinators are super helpful and the leads have a really fun idea of how to manage the club. Like all the local volunteer based clubs coaches can vary from season to season but many have been there for years. Love it, love the community, the kits, the training fields. The clubs mission is incredible. Even if you don’t join you should throw money at them because the kids are living out their dreams there with a club that sees them, supports them and wants them to succeed.

My daughter came to an open practice with Oakland Soccer Club two summers ago. She had never played soccer or any sport for that matter. She was turning 10, so a little late in competitive sport circles. Her first practice demonstrated that she had no natural athletic ability whatsoever (she can thank her dad's genes for that). But because the practice was fun, the field was nice, and the other kids were accomodating, accepting, and friendly, so she decided to keep at it. The coaches worked with her and the other beginner players and gave them ample time in games and they got lots of touches during practice. She would have never gotten that opportunity playing for an established club because she was so far behind in terms of skill and ability. She would have been a benchwarmer. Flash forward two years, and she is now playing competiitvely and handling herself against girls 1-2 years older than her. Other girls made the move to other clubs looking for better opportunities, but we knew that it was going to be a long term project to get her playing competiticely and OSC was the best place for her to progress on her own time. And because we knew it was going to take a couple of years with no guarantees she would keep playing, the cost of OSC became another reason for us to stay. OSC charges 1/2 of what other clubs charge for a full season. They also have two 1.5 hour practices a week which was more than other clubs were offering recreational players at double the cost pf OSC. OSC has always offered equal field time to all of its teams regardless of ability, age, or gender. And because of all that field, practice and game time, our daughter is set up to play in the silver or gold competition league next season after just 2 years amd starting as a complete novice. That is huge, but not as big a deal as the friends she has made, the support she has received and on top of that she has learned a lot of Spanish just by being around her teammates. I really can't say enough about how big a role OSC has played in her development as a soccer player, but more importantly as a young woman.
