Karamu House, founded in Cleveland in 1915 and nationally known as a pioneer of interracial theater, provides arts education to hundreds of children and adults each year and operates a summer camp alongside a day care and community outreach programs. Its Karamu Arts Academy gives students in grades K-12 intensive training in dance, theatre and vocal music, extending to filmmaking and costume design, with the aim of preparing youth to perform at a professional level. The latest production, Tazewell Thompson's "Jubilee," a celebration of Fisk University's "Jubilee Singers," first formed in 1871, famous for singing across the USA and around the world, fundraising for the historically Black college in Nashville, Tennessee. "Jubilee" was joyous and poignant, riveting and filled with nuggets of history of the Black experience in slavery, in Jim Crow (and through today), and the difference of reception in the USA and outside the USA. Each cast member brought a unique facet to the production, presenting their historical Jubilee singer as well as being exceptional artists in their own right. The production was so well balanced every cast member was able to shine equally - which also has been a hallmark of Karamu House productions. We plan on making Karamu part of our life by enjoying season tickets - and Karamu's future by contributing what we can.

Last week I went to see the play Called SISTAS and when I tell you it was nothing less than amazing! I also volunteered for the opening night of the film festival and what a great experience it was. My goal is to audition this upcoming season to be in one of the stage plays. The Karamu House also offers to rent spaces out for your special events!
