Huge, beautiful facility. Yet only has two people working child watch and capacity for one infant at a time? I joined the Y to be able to workout when I’m solo with two littles only to be turned away my first day (didn’t join it time to reserve a spot). Lesson learned, always have to call to check availability and even then it’s still not a guarantee. Disappointing is an understatement.

Love the La Jolla YMCA. The facility is spotless — machines, locker rooms, pool area, everything is consistently clean. It’s also one of the few gyms where it never feels overcrowded. You can actually get a workout in without waiting for equipment or fighting for space. What really stands out though is the staff. Every single employee I’ve interacted with is genuinely nice, helpful, and welcoming. You can tell they care about the members and the community. If you want a clean, friendly place to work out in La Jolla without the chaos, this is it. Highly recommend.

My family has encountered at your facility over the past year bad experiences. While we have only visited the YMCA a handful of times, unfortunately each visit has been disappointing, and our most recent experience was particularly unacceptable. Last Sunday, my husband was using the pool for lap swimming. As is standard practice, he waited for his turn to access a lane and began his swim with the expectation of a safe and uninterrupted environment. While actively swimming and approaching the wall to turn, a lifeguard—identified as Matty (or Maddie)—physically touched his head in an attempt to stop him because another swimmer wished to use the lane. This action raises serious concerns. Physically interrupting a swimmer mid-lap is not only inappropriate, but also potentially dangerous. My husband had rightfully waited his turn, and there were alternative lanes available. Under no circumstance should a swimmer be touched or distracted in this manner. When my husband calmly expressed that he should not be interrupted or touched while swimming, the lifeguard responded dismissively, stating that it was her job. This is particularly troubling given that similar incidents have occurred multiple times before, leading to ongoing frustration. What further escalated the situation was the lifeguard’s behavior afterward. She appeared to laugh and make gestures toward another staff member, displaying a lack of professionalism and respect. As a witness to the entire interaction, I found this conduct unacceptable and inconsistent with the YMCA’s stated values of respect, inclusivity, and safety. The YMCA promotes a vision where every individual is treated with dignity and fairness. Based on this experience, those standards were clearly not upheld. All members—regardless of age or gender—should feel confident that they can use the facilities safely and without unnecessary interference.

I live in La Jolla and there are so many fitness club choices. However, the ymca is truly the best! Courteous staff, great hours, cleanness, quality equipment, great grp exercises classes, all inclusive, two amazing pools! Very reasonable cost! And if you have little children, they even offer free child care!!! Unbeatable!!!🙏♥️

Been a member for about two years now, and the hours/programming schedule for the gymnasium are consistently incorrect. Most of my time here is spent waiting, because they don’t have nearly enough weight lifting equipment. Sometimes I can’t even find a place to stretch. Trust me, it’s not worth the membership “deal.” You’re better off just paying more for a different gym.
