When signing up my nephew for the Junior Minecraft & Roblox Camp, I was under the impression that he would be learning the basics of game development using these platforms. As a software developer myself, I was excited about the opportunity for him to gain hands-on experience. However, when I asked him what he learned throughout the week, the only thing he could tell me was that he built a statue in Minecraft. If I wanted to spend nearly $300 for a week of gameplay, I could have simply kept him at home. What concerns me is that the camp advertises teaching development fundamentals through hands-on learning, but the actual experience seemed to consist mostly of playing games rather than creating or developing anything meaningful. According to my nephew, Roblox Studio was barely used. If it was opened at all, the extent of what he learned was dragging an object into a scene. Prior to attending this camp, I had been teaching him Scratch, and he was becoming genuinely interested in programming and game creation. He was excited to learn how games are made, so it was disappointing to see him come home feeling frustrated because he hadn't learned any real development skills. Another issue was the Google Drive that parents were given access to. We were told it would contain updates showing what the kids were working on each day, including lessons, projects, photos, or progress. Throughout the entire week, nothing was uploaded to any of the folders. I cannot recommend the Junior class based on our experience. It's possible that some of the more advanced courses provide deeper instruction, but if that's the case, the program descriptions need to be much clearer about what is actually taught. The marketing created expectations of learning game development fundamentals, while the reality felt much closer to supervised gameplay.

My kids love Code Ninjas! They have been coding here since its opening in January 2018. Joe and Christina, the owners, are super friendly and know their stuff. It’s a fun way for kids to learn to problem-solve while developing skills for the future. Definitely recommend!!
