Camp Blue Bay

This place is not fit to be a summer camp. There are many many reasons for this, some being the food quality, shower rules, and activities. From all the many atrocities I experienced at this camp, the worst has to be the food. They served chunky milk! It was actually a freaking solid! But they made it worse, by only recalling the milk AFTER serving it! The only other food they served was BAGGED MINI french toast! It was absolutely disgusting, and was hardly edible. They also served expired carrot, and once again, served them AFTER we finished eating them! Next, the cabins. Our cabin was terrible. The room we slept in had only cots. And yes, they creaked. The ventilation was terrible, and we got a crate to store stuff in. No shelves for us! The cabin was hot, and full of bugs! I had to step on at least 5 cockroaches. The place was infested! Coming from someone who slept in a platform tent for 5 days straight, this camp was infested! We had a 2 minute show. When I say two minute, I mean the counselors sat outside the two showers with stop watches. Also the water had one temperature, arctic sea. Not to mention they made us wash our hair in the sink. YES, the SAME flipping sink we brush our teeth in! Some girls stopped even showering. It was that bad! And finally, the terrible activities. I went to this camp for one reason, it had water. The water space was smaller than my bedroom, and was shallow. The ground was rocks. Oh but it gets better, we cant wear shoes, INCLUDING WATER SHOES, and we cant wear goggles. In salt water. It's true. I have terrible eyes, so I wear contacts at night, and if my eyes are open in water, my contacts will burn worse than normal. I had to explain to the lifeguard about how my eyes will burn, and I need googles, and my parents would want it, for her to FINALLY let me wear them. I have written shorter persuasive essays for English class. The swim test was rigged. Step 1, tread water for a minute, I can do this. Step 2, elementary backstroke 1 lap, i can do this. Step 3, swim a lap of freestyle while the waves his you. Is it really my fault I came up for air just as a wave hit me and had to stop to cough. No. But instead I was put in the baby group. Learning elementary backstroke. I swim in the YMCA lap pool. My fastest stroke is freestyle, followed by backstroke. I do not need to learn this. But nooooooo. Only 3 people made it to non baby class. I wonder why. Also swim time was 30 minutes. It was so stupid and pointless, more than half the cabin just sat it out on the sand. Also the other activities included sitting in a circle playing froggy (one person is the frog. they stick out their tongue at people and the people have to sit down. In my 7 day span at this camp, I was never the frog. Also there was no good way to tell if the frog was killing you), playing sleeping lions (laying on the ground in the middle of a active road pretending to be asleep) and our 5 seconds of the ropes course before we became too loud (we were on a seesaw. What did they expect, perfect silence as we nearly fell of a plank of wood). I can go on for a looong time, but all in all, this camp is a waste of money. This was the worst week of my life. If you have gone here, or you are going, break your leg so you cant go, trust me, the pain of your leg will be nothing compared to the agony this camp will inflict on you.

OMG, it’s still here. I went to Blue Bay in the late 1950’s as a Girl Scout and LOVED it, despite the shabby tents and showers. I’m in my late 70s now and I can still see the driftwood and seaweed and feel the pebbles under my feet on the rocky beach. I can still smell the smell of low tide and campfire. I can still hear the songs we sang and the sounds of the seagulls. For this city girl it was JUST what I needed at JUST the right time in my life. Thank you Girl Scouts! Still the best organization in the world for growing confidence and an appreciation for women’s strength.

This rating is from the 1970s: I recall the smell of the salt water, sailing, camp fires, s’mores, crafts, skill building and a little bit of independence and responsibility for a kiddo. Perfect week away from home. Thank you Girl Scouts!

I went to this camp a long time ago so hopefully things have changed. But i always consider that summer to be one of my core memories and also the reason for my fear of spiders. The shabby tents we had were overrun, the disgusting bathrooms and showers were overrun, and at the time the counselors were MONSTERS. i mean really, what couselor makes a 10 year old girl scout drop and give them 20 push ups and then laugh heartily like "i love making them do this" ugh. This camp. I hope for girls of today sake theyve made good changes.

its not for everyone. its pricey though but it’s a camp after all. the showers aren’t that nice. the camp councilors are VERY nice and they do your hair in the morning, they are very helpful. The co-owner of the place is this old lady and she was rude. But you probably won’t encounter her while you’re on the trip.
