Our family has been with Bay City for over 10 years and it has had an enormous impact on my daughter. From the very first class to the final competition, Bay City has been more than just a gymnastics facility. It’s been a second home, a safe place and a foundation for growth. The coaches at Bay City are the heart of the gym. They are not only incredibly knowledgeable and professional, but they are also compassionate mentors who truly care about the kids they train. They recognized my child’s potential, even when she couldn’t see it herself, and they helped her grow not just as a gymnast, but as a leader, teammate, and young adult.

I wanted to share some thoughts about our experience at Bay City Gymnastics, and I hope it’s clear this message comes from a place of reflection — not frustration. Our son last attended a class about seven months ago, after which we were informed he would no longer be able to participate. We've had some time to think it through, and I wanted to offer feedback in the spirit of open communication. We enrolled our 3-year-old with the hope that gymnastics would be a fun way to help him manage his energy and learn new skills. Like many toddlers, he sometimes had trouble listening or staying fully engaged during class. When that happened, he was occasionally pulled out early — which, while tough for him emotionally, we understood was part of the learning process. We supported the idea that he needed to follow instructions in order to continue participating. There was one class in particular where he really seemed to thrive — he listened well, participated, and left feeling proud of himself. We were hopeful that things were turning a corner. Unfortunately, the day before his next scheduled class, we received a call — not from the owner or manager, but from a junior staff member — informing us that he would no longer be allowed to attend due to concerns about safety and listening. When I mentioned his progress in the previous class, the response was awkward silence. We were surprised and disappointed by this decision. We had been happy to pay full price, even when he was occasionally pulled from class early. We weren’t asking for special treatment — just some patience and a chance for him to grow in a supportive environment. Since that time, we’ve learned that our son is autistic (Level 1), which often includes traits like hyperactivity and attention challenges. While we didn’t have this diagnosis during his time at the gym, we now understand his behavior better — and we hope that sharing this might offer some perspective. One other thing I feel compelled to mention: throughout our time at the gym, I couldn’t shake the impression that the environment seemed more tailored toward girls than boys. From the branding and communication style to the general classroom dynamic, it often felt like active boys — especially those who don't immediately follow every instruction — didn’t quite fit the mold of what was expected or welcomed. It’s clear that Bay City Gymnastics is best suited to children who are already able to follow directions consistently. That’s totally fine — but it would be helpful if that expectation was made clearer upfront, especially for parents of younger or neurodivergent children. I hope this feedback is received in the spirit it's intended. While our experience was disappointing, we’ve since learned to look for a place where our son is supported and thriving. For families with kids who don’t fit a typical mold, I’d gently recommend looking elsewhere for a more inclusive environment.

We started coming to bay city gymnastics for a fun extracurricular activity. My daughter has grown so much in her skills and also her ability to listen to instruction . gymnastics has been so much more than just a fun sport. We love bay city and hope to have many more years here.
