Powered by GoogleWe found the Wilderness Christian camp several years ago as parents of a very angry, obstinate, defiant 14 year old son. We had tried many different methods of behavioral interventions with no apparent resolution to our issue. We felt we were basically at the proverbial end of our rope trying to get him to realize that the behavior he exhibited would only lead him down a path of further destruction and irrepairable relationships. We contacted the camp and talked to Jason directly and he stated our son was a perfect candidate for the 20 day switchback program. We sign him up and he experienced 20 days of living in God's creation of wild West Viriginia without electronics. He was challenged, he was guided in God's word, and he had to learn to work with others as a team in order to survive 20 days in the wilderness. He came home a different person. The camp turned out to be the catalyst we were praying for. We believe the Wilderness Christian camp was integral in changing my sons direction. He was less explosive with his outbursts and more pliable to our directions. He gave his life over to the Lord. He gained his salvation. He was now a work in progress. Several years later, he felt led to go back to the camp and volunteer his time. He was welcomed back and he was put to work as a support person. He decided to do it again this past summer. His senior year he decided to join the PA Army National Guard and today he was deployed to his basic training to be followed by his job training. He will be a medic in the Army National Guard. He wants to go to college and do something in the medical field. He has goals for his future. He is putting those goals into motion. We couldn't be prouder of the man he is becoming.
We just picked up our son, 14, from Camp. He had a blast! He also is interested in maybe working there in the future and he definitely wants to go back next year. When we picked him up we enjoyed touring the camp, having a fun little show, and learning how they help the boys learn teamwork, morals, & survival skills. They end camp by putting what they learned together with a 30 mile backpack trip. We also got to enjoy a wonderful BBQ & an awards ceremony. Unfortunately, our son won the "Stinkiest Camper Award" for only taking 2 showers the whole time! Of course the showers are outside & cold, but still...!
If you are hesitating to send your child, don't! This is an opportunity that you don't want to miss. A memory that your child will cherish forever. As a teen, I went to this camp 3 years in a row, and would have went 4 if I had not surpassed the age limit! The staff here are trained to work with and for the teens. The experiences provided are outstanding. Team-building, friendships, survival tools, social skills and positive behavior reinforcement. I cannot say enough good things about this camp and the memories that last a lifetime. It has been 10 years since my last time as a camper and I still share friendships with people I have met while there!
My daughters first overnight summer camp… she’s a little but if a “homebody” and not necessarily “outdoorsy”, but she LOVED camp! She made friends, learned new skills, and grew spiritually. I would recommend this camp to anyone!
We had an absolutely wonderful time at The Wilderness Christian Camp! Jason Perlak and his staff went out of their way to ensure that our family had the best experience possible and we did! They worked excellently with our children and made themselves available to us to complete the parts of the camp we were interested in! We went for the preachers retreat, but they also invited us to church where their true hearts were revealed! I would recommend them to work with any youth, troubled or Christian, their hearts are in the right place!
