The Dallas School of Music (DSM) is a place you enroll to develop into a musician. I’ve learned more in my 2 semesters at DSM than I did in 6 years of band. Dr. Lawrence, Mrs. Tamalyn Lawrence and the rest of the DSM staff are incredible. Everyone is eager to teach and is passionate about music. Dr. Lawrence has an enthusiastic spirit and is so excited to teach me every week. His joy is truly contagious. He explains music theory in a way that’s digestible, which has helped me understand music theory conceptually. Coming to DSM is the highlight of my week. Special shoutout to Mrs. Tamalyn Lawrence. She is so helpful. She responds to messages in a timely manner and is always willing to find a solution for any scheduling/billing conflict that may arise. She is very patient, especially when trying to find the perfect time to schedule your lesson. Lastly, my advice to anyone considering enrolling is: 1. PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! The efficacy of your lessons will be determined by what your effort outside of your scheduled lesson time. If your only practice time is when your lesson is scheduled, of course you will feel as if you are not progressing. So to make it worthwhile, do yourself a favor and schedule time to practice a few times a week at home. 2. COMMUNICATE. Life happens. Schedules are busy. If you can’t make it to a lesson let them know to see if an accommodation can be made. Don’t expect them to come find you and make accommodations for you if you choose not to show up for multiple weeks and not inform anyone.

I’ve taken vocal lessons with Toni Richardson and Lachuné Boyd, piano with Susan Kheshtinejad, and drums with Paul Covert, and every instructor delivers strong technical fundamentals while genuinely building character and confidence in their students. Dallas School of Music truly combines excellence in the arts with real care for student well-being. Dr. Bob Lawrence leads with integrity and compassion. For example, when I began seeing an ENT for my voice, he was willing to pause my lessons at no charge—without me even asking. That kind of leadership says everything—is love for music and his students is so clearly evident. Tamalyn Lawrence has also been incredible, thoughtfully adjusting lesson plans around my work, academics, and even two leg surgeries in one year. Currently, Toni Richardson is helping me break vocal barriers and unhealthy habits so my voice can shine in its own unique way. She brings wonderful energy to each lesson and reminds me that music is meant to be fun, approached with childlike curiosity and joy. A few shoutouts to teachers from the past: Lachuné Boyd helped me develop finesse and discover my personal vocal style. Susan Kheshtinejad patiently corrected piano technique that online lessons simply couldn’t fix. Paul Covert was flexible and supportive while helping me build solid drum fundamentals during my recovery. Every teacher and staff member here genuinely cares about their students’ musical growth and overall well-being. There is no better place for music lessons!

Dr. Lawrence is a wonderful teacher. He has been working with my son for the last four years and has kept him engaged and excited to keep learning and improving on the trumpet. I was looking for jazz piano lessons in the DFW metroplex, and I found Dallas School of Music. I was matched with Bob Lawrence, and he has been nothing but awesome! I have played classical piano for about 11 years now, but I was unsure of how jazz piano was going to be taught. Bob has such a systematic way of teaching jazz that I absolutely love.
