Texas Elks Camp is a free residential camp near Gonzales, Texas, on ten rural acres beside Palmetto State Park, serving Texas children ages 7 to 21 who have special needs or who are in foster care. Sessions run one week, arriving Sunday and departing Friday evening after an awards ceremony, and each session is grouped by age; the operator states there is no fee and accepts campers first-come, first-served. Campers stay in a 20,000-square-foot air-conditioned, handicap-accessible building and use a saltwater pool, turf sports field, archery range, basketball court and petting zoo, with nature walks, arts and crafts, fishing, cookouts and weekly dances, plus staffed outings to bowling alleys, movie theatres, indoor amusement centres and waterparks. Camp directors, counselors, counselors-in-training and nursing staff live on site for the duration of camp, three meals and an evening snack are served with special diets accommodated, and the camp states that children who require one-on-one attention or who use a wheelchair for all mobility are not eligible.

My daughter has autism and a speech delay. This camp has been and will more than likely continue to be something she looks forward to every year. As soon as we pick her up, she's already asking about coming next year. Safe, caring, welcoming staff. Gorgeous location.
