My family and I joined Tennis Academy of Utah (TAOU) on December 1 with a clear understanding of the Club Membership Policies, specifically that members are not permitted to provide tennis instruction. We fully respected that policy. My children are 9 and 12 years old, and our court time consisted solely of casual rallying, mini tennis, and general play for about 1.5 hours at a time. There was no instruction taking place. No footwork training, grip coaching, shot selection guidance, or pattern drills. We were simply hitting the ball back and forth. Despite this, throughout our membership I was repeatedly reminded not to provide instruction. Each time, I clearly stated that I was not teaching, and I remained compliant with the stated policies. As time went on, additional restrictions were introduced, including a change to the Club Membership Policies stating that ball baskets were no longer allowed, as they were considered an indication of instruction. This change felt targeted, but I still complied without issue. Two weeks later, on January 24, I received an email stating that I was again providing on-court instruction. I contacted the owner, Mr. Scott, directly in an effort to resolve the matter. No solution was offered. I was told that staff had “witnessed” instruction taking place, despite my continued compliance and the absence of any actual coaching activity. As someone who works in a leadership role, I strongly believe in accountability, fact-finding, and problem-solving when concerns arise. Unfortunately, none of those principles were applied here. The situation created an uncomfortable and adversarial environment, particularly for a family simply trying to enjoy recreational tennis with their children. If you are considering joining TAOU with the intent of casually hitting the ball with your kids and not enrolling in paid instruction, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Based on our experience, this type of family-oriented, non-instructional play does not appear to be supported or welcomed under their membership model.

I play in the 4.5 men’s classes, and have an absolute blast. The coaches have helped a ton with my net game and forehands. It’s one of the highlights of my week! My 3 kids also learn a lot from Coach Chris; he has helped them learn the basics and most of all help them enjoy the game so they’re excited to keep playing as they get older and keep improving their game! Highly recommend the TAOU

Edit 12/25: We left the club when many of the coaches started to leave. Previous review: We live 5 minutes from another tennis facility and drive the 20 minutes to TAOU because it is 1,000% worth it. Tony and David are the most incredible coaches we have ever hired, by far! We bring all 4 of our kids here (ages 8-16) so we spend a lot of time in the facility and around most of the staff. The facility is like nothing else you will find in Utah. The courts have plenty of room to backup at the baseline (which sadly most indoor facilities don’t have). Also the viewing gallery is so nice to watch your kids play.

Your training and practice/ is so beneficial and we looking forward to continue driving from Boise/Idaho to train with you! Cant wait to apply the new techniques in next weeks tournament!? Thanks for being always so prepared, extremely reliable and punctual. And your staff is amazing as is your facility!
