I've been a member for almost 1 year.. so far it's been a pleasant experience.. altho there have been a few times, when my son, also a member .. misplaced his ID tag.. he has a dangerous type of heart failure and many other life threatening health issues.. He has been in 4 separate ICUs the past year. And altho he didn't have his ID tag.. The receptionist pulled up his membership.. and was allowed to go as my guest. THIS TIME was a very different experience!! As we entered... there was an older gentleman ..entering ahead of us.. We repectfully stepped aside. . When asked what he was doing.. he answered.. "Being nosey" He was very politely told he could take the stairs or the elevator.. So seeing this.. I said my son ..did not have his ID tag and that he was my guest.. He was immediately stopped and very rudely told that he would have to pay $3.00.. that it was in the rule book when we joined. So embarrassing !! I am 72 yrs with serious arthritis .. I drove us there.. needing to walk to warm up my joints to relieve my pain. When we were turned away ..it meant I would have to drive the 5 miles each way... in traffic.. there and back .. still in pain . I decided it was just too much for me.. we didn't go back.. What I am so upset about? is that.. the Rec Center has a photo of both myself AND my son on file.. It would have been very quick and simple to pull our photos up on a computer screen.. very simple !! While a "total stranger" was politely allowed to walk right in.. my goodness!!.. is that not a safety concern?!! Oh yes.. that's a very real security breach..!!! We are rethinking... renewing our membership. Planet Fitness is less than half the cost with 3 times the amenities. I was born just up the street in St Luke's Hospital. and raised on the banks of the Neuse River. Educated in our local schools. I take pride in this beautiful city, with it's rich history... and have been recommending this facility to all of my friends. This is very disappointing. I certainly will not recommend Stanley White Rec Center to seniors. #1. Because of an unfriendly reception #2. There are serious security concerns. Most of the time the entire facility is practically empty.. Very few people.. Makes me wonder.

I purchased a year membership for both me and my mom and went for my daily walk at the rec center just like any other day. I could find my membership tag but I went anyway because I didn't have it the last three times so I figured I didn't need it. Well I guess I did something wrong this time when I walked in behind an elderly African American man who casually strolled by the front desk and when asked what he was doing he said "being nosey" after which he was told he could choose the stairs or the elevator and was never asked for a membership id. So I figured all is good and me and my 72 year old mother who also has a year pass and had her card with her and scanned it proceeded ahead. I was immediately reprimanded and told to come back. It was then the desk lady told me if I didn't have my card it would be $3 or I could not proceed and it is in the rule book apparently. So the gentleman before us was aloud to be "nosey" without a membership but I was acertively denied because I didn't have $3 when I paid $300+ for a year membership and they have my picture on file....and if I'm not mistaken my mom had her card so I could be her guest. I have never felt more animosity from a gym staff member in my life and wish at this point I went to planet fitness and got a membership for half the price and double the amenities...AND they are not racist...call it what it is...

They have an indoor walk/running track inside. It is open to the public 3 times a day for two hours each. We went during the 7-9 am hours and it was not to crowded.

Love this place especially the walking track-spacious. Love the atmosphere of the classes. Ben, the instructor is knowledgeable, personable and ready to give you alternate exercises to suit your abilities.
