St. Columba is the Episcopal Diocese of West Tennessee's camp and retreat center on a private 145-acre Memphis campus of old-growth forest, open fields, creeks and a lake. Its MUD Camp is a day camp for rising 1st through rising 6th graders, running five full sessions from late June through July, where more than 600 campers a summer climb, zip line, kayak, paddleboard, swim, hike and slide in the camp's mud hole. The center states it is a safe space for all campers and staff regardless of national origin, creed, religious belief, gender identity, sexual orientation, family structure or ability, and it also hosts overnight and weekend group adventures year-round.

But, if you would like to experience a sense of the outdoors via a nature walk or Creek bed adventure, going during late winter early spring (right around the corner) is the best time to do it give the Midsouth heat. The grounds provide for the opportunity to hunt for native critters living in the area, i.e. deer, moles, raccoons, rabbits, various birds, a plethora of insect life and so much more. On this day and one prior the naturalist led the children (eight graders) along natural trails and eventually a creek bed walk through water that was in the area. The creek bed walk, finding small plants, a salamander, spotting deer and insect life seemed to be the highlights of their time outdoors - of course it didn't hurt either that they got to do team building exercises and play in the mud! So, if you are not a true "roughing it" kind of person, but you want to get close while not "becoming one with" nature; check out this retreat and enjoy some outdoor time with your family and friends.

The staff are excellent and very accommodating. Our out-of-town guests were able to stay at Scheibler Lodge for a very reasonable overnight fee as well. It was perfect.
