Sitka Fine Arts Camp is a residential summer arts program in Sitka serving students from kindergarten through high school. Campers choose from classes in theater, dance, music, creative writing, visual arts, digital arts, and Alaska Native arts, organized into two-week sessions by age group (mini, middle-school, and high-school camps). The nationally recognized nonprofit serves roughly 1,000 students each year from Alaska and beyond.

The shows and viewings are amazing and I’ve seen many teens transformed by their time being a creator, an artist. It’s an eclectic group of kids, many from out of the USA, and that diversity brings in new cultural experiences for everyone. Roger Schmidt, the Director is a visionary and that shows in everything they do.

We live in California, so it was a little scary for both of us to have her travel alone and spend 2 weeks away from home. But everything went off without a problem. She stayed in the dorm rooms, and made so many new friends! She loved the counselors, and enjoyed the classes. I flew up for the final 2 days of camp so I could watch the kids' final performances. The camp's grounds (previously a college campus) are absolutely gorgeous, with sprawling green lawns and overlooking the harbor. The performing arts center, where the final performances were, was a mile or so off campus. It, too, is a beautiful facility. I stayed in downtown Sitka, and was able to walk everywhere- the camp, performing arts center, restaurants etc. My daughter said that going to Sitka Fine Arts Camp was a life changing experience for her. Meeting new people outside the usual high school drama she sees everyday at home really opened up her eyes. She said the kids were so genuine and happy at camp, which I thought was great! It gave her confidence and a taste of independence by traveling alone. The cost was reasonable for staying in the dorms. About $1400 for the 2 weeks, plus airfare. I should note her one complaint- the food was just so-so.
