★★★★★William BarrowsI was a camper here for several years in the late 70s, when it was Camp St Michael run by the area Catholic parish. It was boys only, grouped by age with groups of about 10 kids with a counselor for each group. We slept on the ground and went on long hikes where we would cook our own food. They had the best swimming areas on the Eel River, including King Kong dive. This was a fallen redwood that stretched across the river. Brave campers would jump nearly 40 feet into the Eel! Polar Bear swimming on cool mornings was another favorite. The food was good. We all learned a lot about a man named Michael, who died in a painting accident after taking the place of a coworker that was afraid of the scaffolding. Hence the camp’s name, his spirit of caring and compassion for others was instilled in us all. They offered low income programs that allowed our mom, a struggling single mother, to be able to send both her sons for an 8 day summer camp. Our cost was only 50 dollars, and all we had to bring was clothes and a sleeping bag. They taught us so much about river swimming, woodworking, team building, hiking and survival, respect for nature, and appreciation for the amazing beauty of the Redwood Forest. Some of my fondest childhood memories were formed here. It’s great to see the camp carrying on and still being used as a summer camp!
