I had a very mixed experience here. My first instructor, Adda Shur, started off well—the first two lessons were good, and I assumed we just had different personalities. However, things quickly became uncomfortable. She came across as very closed off, and I could sense her getting agitated without understanding why. When I tried to speak or ask questions, I often felt ignored, which made the environment feel unwelcoming. There were multiple moments that felt dismissive and discouraging. I was told my voice was “untrained,” which I already knew—that’s exactly why I was there. When I got confused about which line to sing, I wasn’t asking to learn how to read music, just for a bit of guidance, but was told that teaching me that wasn’t her job. That was frustrating and disheartening. Another uncomfortable moment was being asked to return a book I had purchased on Amazon because she wouldn’t receive money unless it was bought through the school. That felt inappropriate and unprofessional. Overall, I left feeling talked down to rather than supported, which is the opposite of what I was hoping for when learning something new. Being told later that she “didn’t realize” she hurt my feelings only made it feel like the situation was somehow my fault, even though I never had the opportunity to express myself—it felt like trying to communicate with a wall. That said, I do want to highlight my second instructor, Anna Hylton, who was absolutely wonderful. She was encouraging, kind, and genuinely enjoyable to work with. I would give her 5 stars without hesitation. Unfortunately, my initial negative experience made it difficult for me to continue. Thank you, Anna, for your kindness—I truly needed that.

I always enjoy my lessons with Dave. As an instructor he is always looking for something new to show me as well as working on things that I request to learn. I think that I may be a little challenge for him occasionally because I'm a more experienced player and as an instructor I feel like he may work with more first time learners where they are just learning strumming patterns and chords. I also haven't probably been the easiest person to coach because I'm still trying to trying to figure out what type of guitar player I want to be. We have worked on many styles, songs, and methods. We have touched on music theory. I always come away working on something I didn't know how to do. I always get a kick out of when I hit the right note or get the right groove he smiles real big and says "nice". He has helped me tremendously with my confidence as a guitar player. He pushes me to get outside of my comfort zone. For example, I'm really not to keen on improvising with scales, but he always slides a little of that into our session or at least every other session because he knows it's the next step of my guitar journey. I enjoy his large song selection that he can pull from as well as he knows the back story of the bands or artists. As a music person that is part of learning an instrument as well in my opinion. I look forward to my next lesson.

The OMA studio and Mr. Jon have fostered both a joy and a maturity in the music of my 10 and 12 year olds. The girls have been with the studio for several years and are so happy with the innovative, fun lesson set-ups. They love to perform now, and have overcome their stage fright. The confidence they have developed in music has spilled over into their academics, athletics, and more importantly, their faith lives. As parents, we are 100% pleased for the wonderful influence and results of the studio.
