Open Doors Academy is a Cleveland-based nonprofit providing year-round afterschool and summer programs to K-12 students across Northeast Ohio. Its summer camp runs up to eight weeks (June-August) and is designed to counter 'summer slide,' combining academics (English language arts and math) with social-emotional learning, visual and performing arts, college visits, field trips (Cleveland Zoo, aquarium, farms), and a week-long service-learning trip.

There have been ongoing and serious issues with the new program director at ODA. We have never experienced this many problems with ODA until this lady took over. She is consistently rude and unprofessional. For example, my sister went to pick up our younger siblings at EPrep, and the program director tried to get her attention by rudely saying “excuse me” and glaring at her in an aggressive, confrontational way. My younger sister has also told us on multiple occasions that this same woman is rude to the children as well. ODA continues to claim that they take these kinds of concerns seriously, yet they still allow this lady to remain in charge of children. To make matters worse, they even hid my review online in an attempt to make their rating go back up, instead of addressing the real issue. Now, the situation has gotten even worse — my youngest sister is being removed from the program. All because she needed to use the bathroom, but instead of simply cleaning it so she could go comfortably, they sent her back to class. As a result, she had an accident and went on herself. And now, instead of taking accountability for their neglect, ODA is saying she can no longer be part of the program because they “can’t accommodate her.” The only accommodation she ever needed was for them to do their job and clean the bathroom so she could use it at her scheduled time. It seems like now this program is just looking for reasons to remove my siblings because we KEEP making complaints about the directors unacceptable behavior. It’s unacceptable that this woman continues to mistreat both children and parents, and that ODA allows this behavior to continue. She is letting the little bit of power she has go straight to her head, and it’s the families and children who are suffering because of it.

Open Doors Academy is one of the best after school programs in Ohio! They offer a wide range of activities for the children and push for families to be involved in the program as well! More people should know about Open Doors Academy!!

Open Doors Academy (ODA) operates 27 before and afterschool programs serving around 1,300 students every year. They have programs in Cleveland (Cleveland Metropolitan School District), Cleveland Heights-University Heights, Breakthrough Schools, Euclid City Schools, Firelands, Lima, Sandusky and Mansfield. All of their programs are free. Programming is focused on improving outcomes in the areas of academics (literacy and mathematics), college and career preparation through college visits, corporate partnerships with companies such as MAGNET, and internship possibilities. ODA also knows that a child's developmental success starts in the home and they have an entire team of staff dedicated to engaging families and meeting unique needs in a very structured and meaningful way through family events, holiday heart giving, and much more. They are more than just a safe and fun place for students afterschool, they provide structured intervention and supports in academics, character development and enrichment. Depending on the location, they design enrichment programs to leverage the abilities of the staff and community partners, and the needs/interests of the students. Just a few of the dozens of enrichment opportunities include culinary arts, step team, robotics, archery, anime and drama. They also run summer camps in both the Cleveland and Mansfield areas.

ODA has profoundly impacted my family's lives. The organization's comprehensive support extends beyond providing a nurturing environment for my children; it also strengthens our family unit. The resources offered, from tutoring to the Haven House pantry, are invaluable. While we initially benefited from the free lunch program, I quickly recognized the exceptional opportunities ODA provides. As a result, my sons have broadened their horizons through travel across the United States and now aspire to pursue higher education. Thank you, ODA.
