I am beyond disappointed and honestly heartbroken by our experience with Empower Sports and Camps regarding the Shale Meadows Elementary “Parents Night Out” Glow Party. This event was promoted to all families at Shale Meadows, the school both of my children attend, as a fun, inclusive night for K–5th graders. The flyer highlights a safe, exciting environment filled with activities like martial arts, glow dancing, movies, and games. As a parent of a child with cerebral palsy who uses a wheelchair, I assumed “all families welcome” meant exactly that. Unfortunately, I was told they cannot accommodate my daughter because they are unable to manually push her wheelchair during the event. It is incredibly frustrating and deeply upsetting to have an event advertised to the entire elementary school community, only to learn that my child cannot participate because she requires basic mobility assistance. Inclusion is not just a word for marketing materials, it should mean making reasonable efforts so children of all abilities can participate alongside their peers. My daughter attends this school. Her friends will be there. She deserves the same opportunity to attend a simple school community event without being excluded because she uses a wheelchair. I truly hope Empower Sports and Camps reevaluates what inclusion means and ensures their events align with the message they promote. Families like ours should not have to question whether “all are welcome” actually includes our child. Extremely disappointed.
