We just came here for a day at the pool using the free one day pass and we had a good time. It’s smart how they do the one day pass with your ID and it’s a good opportunity to give anyone an idea of what it is like there. The lifeguards were pretty helpful. The pool seemed clean. Some of the staff kinda looked like they didn’t wanna be there but it was late in the day so it is understandable. They don’t have a hot tub but they have a sauna and a kids pool and a lap pool with a deep end.

I’ve been a member of the Kohl Family YMCA in Akron for only a couple of weeks, yet it already feels like a place I’ve known much longer than that. The fitness facilities are excellent—well maintained, thoughtfully arranged, and never feeling indifferent to the people who use them—but it’s the aquatics area that quietly sets the tone for everything else. There’s a genuine intelligence to the programming: youth learning the water with care and energy on one side, older adults and retirees finding both movement and ease on the other. The open swim lanes are a gift for anyone who treats exercise as something steady and necessary, like breathing. I’ve also been especially impressed with the lifeguards and with Alex, the aquatics director, whose presence seems to hold the whole system together with calm attentiveness. Beyond the water, the staff across the board—front desk and custodial alike—carry a kind of unobtrusive hospitality. Nothing forced, just a steady welcome. And there’s a real sense of community in the lobby, where people linger and talk as if the building were not merely a facility but a commons. It feels like an institution shaped by a deeper intention—something that traces back to Doug Kohl’s influence and the spirit associated with his leadership in the Akron area YMCA tradition. Whatever the history, what remains today is something quietly rare: a place that actually gathers people into something shared, without making a spectacle of it.

Happy with the facility. Clean, plenty of various equipment and always go in and get a good workout without standing in line and waiting for machines to be available I love the walking area there are people various ages, shapes and sizes appear to enjoying their workouts would recommend to everyone. They have various classes such as swimming, yoga ,senior citizens ,and children activities as well as full court for basketball.

I am extremely disappointed with the sauna situation at Kohl Family YMCA in Akron. Having a co-ed sauna for both men and women is creating a very uncomfortable and unsafe environment, especially for women. There have been multiple times when I went to relax after my workout and felt completely uncomfortable. I have experienced people teasing, laughing, and making comments about my body. I have even witnessed couples behaving inappropriately inside the sauna. This is not acceptable behavior in a fitness facility that is supposed to promote health, respect, and community values. The sauna should be a place to relax and recover — not a place where women feel judged, objectified, or unsafe. Privacy and comfort matter. Many women may avoid using the sauna entirely because of this issue. I strongly urge management to take this seriously and create separate sauna spaces for men and women, or implement strict supervision and clear conduct rules immediately. This is about safety, dignity, and respect. I hope the management addresses this right away before more members feel uncomfortable or decide to cancel their membership.

Me and the boys came here to workout and swim ! We also hit on other cute guys in the locker room because we r gay. This place is so clean and well maintained it’s awesome! What an awesome and accepting place for me and the bros to come workout, swim and have a great time shirtless together. When we left we got a bus home and my barfly of an aunt was at the gym and sadly she hopped on the bus. She tried to join us back seat cool kids but she’s a barfly and she’s ignorant so we told her no and bullied her and made her cry. We can get pretty nasty and ignorant on the bus to people who cause drama like she does. I would definitely come here and check this place out.
