Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center
Private
The Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center at Rice University runs the Summer Youth Activity Program (SYAP), a day camp that introduces children to a variety of sports and recreational activities in a friendly, non-competitive setting, led by Rice and other area university students plus professionals trained in education and recreation. Four sessions of roughly two weeks each run from early June through the end of July on the Rice campus in Houston; the camp day ends at 3:45 p.m., with optional late care until 6 p.m., and campers bring their own lunch. Open to ages 6 to 11, with a separate Counselors-In-Training program for older youth. Registration opens in February with priority windows for Rice faculty, staff, students and alumni before open community registration, and sessions are capacity-limited with a waitlist.
The practical details
We list only what the camp itself publishes, and programs change — dates, prices, ages and availability can all move after we check. Confirm the details on the camp’s own website and contact Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center directly before you register or pay. Last checked August 2026.

It’s nice for people and all of the students to exercise. There are gym, swimming pool, and all kinds of ball courts
Nice small university Recreation center with lots of options and good staff. Staff is there to help answer questions and supervise the areas as necessary. They were quick to respond to issues as we needed them. They redid the outside lights so it looks nice and is well lit. Lots of machines to use and never seems too crowded.
