The Ferguson Community Empowerment Center is a Salvation Army facility in north St. Louis County, built with the Urban League after 2014. It runs Spark Academy, a year-round after-school and summer enrichment program for youth in grades 3 to 6 across the Ferguson-Florissant area, offering a supportive environment to build confidence, relationships and decision-making skills, plus week-long summer camp sessions.

★★★★★D M!A touching memorial for one of the first young Black people to die in the early years of the Black Lives Matter movement. That was in 2014, and the memorial set up near the Canfield/Coppercreek intersection has largely been faded, but just around the corner, this empowerment center is active and compelling at the former site of the convenience store that Mr. Brown visited on that fateful day. The Staff is courteous and understanding that visitors still want to see the dignity and interests of young Mr. Brown, and there's a memorial telephone booth inside that includes recordings of people wishing him birthday greetings. There's also a roster (unfortunately a growing one) of other people of color whose lives were cut down in their young years by encounters with law enforcement. For those who might be concerned for safety, this is a safe location in St. Lois's Ferguson area, and located along a well-traveled major street. Good parking.

The case works are very helpful and eager to help all who walk in the door. I did not get the opportunity to see the staff with the children but I am told they are under new leadership and as eager as the case workers to work with the children soon, as an after school resource, complete with activities and homework assistance.
