(Families of Autistic Children of Tidewater) is a Virginia Beach nonprofit that runs Camp GonnawannaGOagin', a summer day camp for individuals ages 6 through adult with a primary diagnosis of autism. Across seven one-week sessions, campers enjoy swimming, field trips and friendship in a structured program that builds communication and social skills, with each camper paired with a typical "peer buddy" and a roughly 1:2 staff-to-camper ratio.

Ever since I was diagnosed with autism at age three, I realized I wanted to make friends but the opportunities to bond with others was limited. This year, I volunteered for basketball and bowing and blossomed. Five years from now, I hope I’m heavily contributing to this great program for autistic people of all levels.
