EXPLO (Exploration Summer Programs) is a nonprofit educational summer program founded in 1976 and headquartered in Norwood, offering immersive day and residential enrichment for students by grade band—EXPLO Junior (grades 4-7) at Regis College in Weston, plus Senior and Pre-College programs at other campuses. Rather than a traditional camp, students choose hands-on academic and creative courses; need-based financial aid is available.

I am writing this review as a warning to other parents of non-neurotypical children: my son underwent psychological abuse at this camp because they did not understand his quirks. Some of the staff, who are untrained in working with non-neurotypical kids, took it upon themselves to assess and “help” my child. They also ignored his concerns about the way discipline was handled at camp, and redirected his thoughts to how his concerns might be due to his history of depression and anxiety. The whole experience was a nightmare. My son loved this camp with all his heart in his first week there. He felt he had ‘found his people’; other nerdy kids who were passionate about science. That all changed as he began to see injustices in the way discipline was managed, which he is very sensitive to. He is the kind of kid that has a deep drive to know why adults make the decisions they make, and even though he is only 12 he has a mature ability to understand these things when they are explained to him. The fact that his concerns were redirected and blamed on his diagnoses is abuse. After an initial incident involving this, he was seen as a ‘problem’ by some of the camp staff, who ended up perpetrating even more egregious abuse later in his camp experience. Please learn from my mistakes. I do not want anyone else’s child to undergo the experiences that mine went through. The whole thing breaks my heart.

My daughter has been attending Explo for years and, each time she returns from camp, I am amazed to see her growth and maturity. Explo is so well-designed and implemented - from the website, to the application process, to activities, courses and electives, Explo is just top-notch.

My son and his friend just got back from Oxford/London program and they could not be more disgusted with the London portion of the trip. They housing was filled with mold and showers where cold water for 5 kids per shower. They were terribly disorganized, the activities were not fun or educational and 8-10 kids in the group agreed this was a "scam". They took our money and provided little quality educational experience. Really sad waste of time. One upnote was the quality professor from Turkey who taught at Oxford.

EXPLO is an amazing summer enrichment program! There are incredible opportunities in STEM programs and summer leadership programs. Most importantly, the kids have fun and make tons of friends while learning. The staff are top notch and very caring, and there are so many activities offered all day and into the evening. Truly something for everyone here - the best in youth summer courses! Check out the class meeting with the US delegation and staff at the United Nations!
