THIS MESSAGE IS FOR PARENTS CONSIDERING THIS FACILITY FOR THEIR TROUBLED CHILD! I was a troubled youth. I put my parents through a lot, and I understand why they felt they had no other option at the time. Thirteen years ago, around 2 a.m., they dropped me off here hoping it would help straighten me out. At intake, the main staff member/supervisor was extremely friendly and reassuring to my parents and to me. But once the doors closed and my parents left, the environment changed completely. Life inside felt more like incarceration than rehabilitation. We were required to walk with our arms crossed behind our backs, if we were to cross a hallway or path we'd have to yell out cross and get approval to. We were physically restrained when we didnt listen to the "counselors", and treated in a way that felt controlling rather than therapeutic. There was little focus on understanding why kids were struggling and only on enforcing compliance. Due to my families religious beliefs, I was restricted from eating much of the food that was served. As a result, four days a week I was only allowed to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches because accommodations were not properly made. Im not saying this was supposed to be some 5 star Michelin experience, but it definitely had an impact on me, my moods/emotions.. it certainly didnt make this experience any better. I’m sharing this not to excuse my behavior as a teenager, but to remind parents that facilities like this can do more harm than good. In some cases, sitting with your child, working through issues together, or seeking alternative forms of support may be more effective than placing them in an environment that feels punitive. At that age I was lost and needed guidance. I needed a great role model that had a similar mindset as myself. Every child is different but parents deserve to know what this place was like from someone who lived it. Fortunately for me and my family, I never held this against them because I understand what I put them through and understood they were only doing what they thought would be best. But please for the love of god, love your children, sit down with them, try to Crack that egg shell of theirs and get inside to get to know them better. Do activities THEY like and not what you MIGHT think they like. If youre a parent with a troubled teen, please do all that you can before thinking of sending them to a place like this.
I was here about 13 years ago and if its anything like it was when I was there its false advertisement, yes there was some good but its not a place for children, I ended up with more problems after than what I started with, my parents sent me here with a understanding it would be a great program but the intake building is like a prison, you wear bob barker scrubs and sandals, your room has a tiny window and big metal magnet on the door and your locked in your room, if you have to pee you have to use a buzzer to request to be let out of your room, you have to walk with your arms behind your back and stop and say "cross" to be able to cross the lines on the floor that separate the difference rooms.. I witnessed kids get abused mentally and physically, I was put in body holds myself back In the day, they search your room and destroy it and flip it to look for contraband and you get in trouble if you have it a damn pencil can be contraband!!! They force religion down your throat and if you don't abide by it its not good for you.. PLEASE DONT SENT YOUR CHIKDREN HERE LONG TERM!!! I BEG YOU.. still till this day when I try and explain what really happened in there to my family they still are under belief that this was a godly great place and it wasn't because the face picture they painted and put on when family did visit please just talk to your child and find other options.
I was a chaperone for Mary McGuire elementary school and by and large the 5th grade camp experience was awesome for students & staff. The camp counselors were competent and great with young kids. All the activities were fun for the kids & not too challenging. Sean, the camp director was very receptive to feedback and down to earth. But why the 3-star review? Drinking water access... Eagle village promptly locks all buildings after dinner. I understand why they do this, and they should lock up for the night. But we weren't warned about this during our 2 night stay. All purified drinking fountains were behind locked doors and our students had no water for the last 2 hours before bed. On the second night, Eagle Village informed us that students can drink from the bathroom sink in the cabins because the water is filtered. We tried the water and it was warm and tasted horrible. Perhaps you should announce at dinner that this is our opportunity to fill our water bottles? And when was the last time you changed the water filters in the cabin? This isn't personal, we just want our kids to stay hydrated. Other than that, I recommend eagle village.
Our church went here for a discipleship retreat. The Eagle Village Camp staff was awesome and very polite. They met all our needs. The motel rooms where we stayed were plenty of room for our family of 5. There was so much open space to explore although the weather wasn't the best. We could not enjoy the pool or canoeing. Their indoor high ropes and climbing walls were pretty cool.
