EAC Discovery Park Campus

We didn’t get to explore much of this actual park, but it was the starting and ending point of our tour of Mt Graham Observatory. We met at the park, watched a video, and learned a bit about the area. We then rode in vans up to the ranger station for lunch of Subway sandwich meals and then up to the observatory area where we got fantastic tours of the three telescope facilities located there. Our docent guides were terrific and full of knowledge, interesting facts, and fun stories all the way up the mountain. It was nice just to enjoy the scenery without having to concern ourselves with driving. At the observatory, we were able to go inside all three buildings and see things up close.

I visited the Discovery Park several years ago, and put the Mt. Graham Observatory tour on my wish list. Well, I finally did it this past weekend, and it's a mind boggler. I've been to several observatories, including Kitt Peak, Whipple, Lowell, USNO, and Lowell/Discovery. The Large Binocular Telescope blows everybody out of the water.

Looks like a really interesting place- we enjoyed walking around the grounds. Google maps said it was open, the sign on the door said it would open at 1 (it was 12:30). We waited but no one came. The phone message said it’s best to make an appointment to get inside. Advice- don’t assume you’ll get in.

Quite and regal, beautiful uninhibited location. Worth a trip just to cruise nature and it’s beauty in the Arizona region.
