My experience with the Decatur YMCA has already been such a warm and welcoming one. While searching for a summer camp for my 9-year-old daughter a bit later in the season than most parents, I was honestly nervous about finding the right fit. From the moment I walked in, Aminata, the Youth Development Director, greeted me with kindness, patience, and a genuine willingness to help. She walked me through the application process, explained all of the available program options, and truly took the time to help me complete the online registration process in a way that aligned with my daughter’s needs and best interests. Her support made what could have been a stressful process feel seamless and reassuring. I couldn’t have asked for a warmer introduction to the Decatur YMCA, and I’m so excited for my daughter to be part of the YMCA family this summer. I already know she’s going to come home with amazing memories, new friendships, and stories about all of the fun experiences ahead. Thank you again, Aminata, for creating such a welcoming and community-centered experience!
Was in town for the weekend so popped in Friday morning to work out. Overall the experience was great. Buy as a Nationwide member who has visited several locations, I was a little put off by having to fill out a two page form, as well as have my drivers license scanned which I have never experienced while visiting other locations. In addition the black woman working the front desk went from sounding like a friendly customer service employee with the Caucasian before me in line to a disgruntled TSA agent with me. To my soul brothers and sisters out there “Stockholm Syndrome” is real. But all my interactions with the members were great Y members are great people…. with the exception of the occasional bench hoggers 🙂, you know who you are.
If I could leave no stars, I would. This YMCA is poorly run. Currently, there is no executive Director and no one managing aquatics This is the second time in one month that I am aware of where the pool had to be closed because a lifeguard does not show up. This is one of many issues that I have experienced in the last few years. Paying over $80 a month Is no longer an option with the way that this facility is operating. When you asked to speak to someone in charge as this morning, the response is, there’s no one here. Totally unacceptable I will be moving my membership elsewhere
Great facility offering something for all ages from childcare to lap swimming. Staff is very friendly, patient and informative. Pool activities are well scheduled and you can even reserve a lane for swimming laps. Membership is by the month with no contract. Stop by or go on-line to see the full list of offerings. Parking is adequate, but if it’s busy your first workout could be getting to the front door.
