This camp is the reason I’m an atheist now. It taught me that religion is just a way to control people. I hope things have changed since I went here in the early 2000s. It remains one of the worst memories I have. Counselors would intentionally embarrass campers as a “punishment” for having a crush on another camper. I went with my best friend and we got punished for whispering to each other quietly one night. She had some serious family stuff going on but, instead of talking to us, or treating us with any dignity whatsoever, the counselors forced us to stay in the cabin for most of the following day in silence. They also didn’t believe that I was a vegetarian and try to make me eat meat. They called my mom, who confirmed that I was a vegetarian, and the counselors made fun of me. What an absolute nightmare.
