This was our sons first time doing dance, hes 4 years old, and although this place is cute it didn't really provide any structure for him. The studio is one single room...no office no lobby, jusg an open space. The dance instructor for the toddler class was absolutely phenomenal and patient and kind beyond words. I just wished the class had more structure and redirection in it. It was more a free for all for the ones who did show up and no one listened to the instructor. Parents here suck and I hope they see this review too. Parents do not know how to keep their children under control. Not only that but after idk 8 weeks of class MY SON WAS THE ONLY ONE TO SHOW UP FOR THE DANCE RECITAL. My son was in tears and just wanted to dance with his "friends" and not a single one out of a class of 6 or 7 showed up but my son. He was devastated and this was a huge letdown. Communications as to when and where the recital would be were kinda of bad. Instructor did try to dance with Nolan for the recital but he didn't want to do it without his friends. All in all my son learned nothing but disappointment here.
I took adult ballet classes around the 2011-2013 timeframe (when their studio was above urban mining off main and Westport) and highly recommend. The gal that taught was epic. I wish I remembered her name but her classes were so much fun yet challenging, not to mention ‘on pointe’ literally and non literally. I believe she had Russian prima ballerina education but I could totally be wrong on that. Helped me so much on my turn out, alignment, posture, and technique.
I love dancing here. City in Motion is a community! Whether you are a dancer, teacher, parent, volunteer…we are all part of a long legacy of dance in Kansas City. 💗
Retired Army Infantry guy here! I never thought I'd learn to love Modern Dance. Not until I met City in Motion Dance theatre, Inc. From the first performances I watched, I was entranced by the talent and passion of their performance Company. I immediately got into this community and started serving. Their dance classes are inclusive and nuanced to all abilities and ages. Their studios are professionally maintained and fully accessible. City in Motion has incredible KC History, going back almost 40 years. The thing I love most about this organization: it's students, families, volunteers, dancers, choreographers, artistic directors and board of directors directly reflects the diversity, richness, and passion of Kansas City! Next time I'm back in KC, I am stopping by City in Motion.
