Cataloochee Ski Area, North Carolina's first ski area, opened near Maggie Valley in 1961 and offers ski and snowboard lessons at its Snowsports Center. Kids lessons include the CAT Trackers program, and local children can join after school lessons. Lessons are taught privately or in groups of similar skill level, and beginners practice on small hills at the base served by moving carpet lifts. The area relies primarily on snowmaking and is known for one of the longest ski seasons in the Southeast.
