The Carolina Sailing Foundation runs a junior summer sailing camp on Jordan Lake at Crosswinds Boating Center in Apex for children ages 9-16. Weeklong sessions meet Monday through Friday with drop-off around 8:45-9 a.m. and pickup at 4 p.m., grouping kids into beginner and intermediate levels. Younger sailors use single-person Optimist dinghies while older kids sail two-person 420s, taught by US Sailing Level 1 certified instructors.

★Khaled BasheerSigned up our boys for a week long sailing course. Captain Charlie, who is the founder/owner, yelled at and gave negative and hurtful comments to my younger son. To be clear, I understand that sometimes there are times when kids need to be disciplined, hence appropriate disciplining to be done, but this was a situation where my younger son didn’t deserve to get treated and get put down like that…this should have been an opportunity for the teacher to teach the student, not put them down. It was also a situation where my son wasn’t being rebellious or annoying, as his older brother, who was on the boat as well, was witness and vouched that it got too extreme and uncalled for. I think if you plan to run a business like this, you should be patient and understanding of kids, if you are short tempered and not able to properly interact and are putting kids down, you shouldn’t be running such a business..
★★★★★Jeff R. RobbinsI took the "Learn to Sail" program from Carolina Sailing Foundation (CSF) in October 2023; I loved every minute of it! It was a 2-day program; we started each day with a short session of classroom training on "book knowledge", which was certainly useful and informative. After the classroom sessions; we took it up a notch with a full 10 hours of on-water saililng. The class certainly requires (for working adults) a non-trivial investment in time and tuition $, but this investment is more than worth it... The cost of boating without adequate safety training can be much, much more. For youth, the CSF provides lower-cost options that are priceless in terms of providing students an enjoyable and safe experience.
