Powered by GoogleA Life-Changing Experience at Camp Spring Creek As a parent of a child with dyslexia, finding the right environment for my son has always been a priority. After attending Camp Spring Creek in North Carolina for four years, I can confidently say that this camp has been nothing short of transformative for him. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that Camp Spring Creek is more than just a summer camp—it’s a place where kids with dyslexia and learning differences are embraced, empowered, and given the tools they need to thrive. The camp’s unique focus on dyslexia sets it apart from traditional camps, providing specialized, individualized learning strategies that are not only effective but also incredibly fun. The most remarkable achievement I’ve witnessed is how my son has grown in both confidence and academic skills. Each year, he comes back with new breakthroughs, whether it's reading more fluently, improving his writing, or mastering techniques to navigate his dyslexia more independently. The expert staff at Camp Spring Creek, with their deep understanding of dyslexia, work with each child to tailor interventions that meet them where they are and help them reach their full potential. What really stands out to me, though, is the camp’s culture. Camp Spring Creek fosters a sense of belonging and community, where my son has made lasting friendships with other campers who truly understand his struggles. The campers support each other, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and empathy. The camp is not just about overcoming challenges—it's about celebrating the unique strengths and talents of each child. Additionally, the camp's activities are designed to engage kids in a way that doesn’t feel like “school.” From outdoor adventures to arts and crafts, every aspect of the camp is an opportunity for growth, exploration, and fun. My son looks forward to his time at Camp Spring Creek every year, and I’m amazed at how much he accomplishes. If you have a child with dyslexia or other learning differences, I can’t recommend Camp Spring Creek enough. It’s a place where kids not only gain valuable academic skills but also learn the invaluable lesson that they are capable, worthy, and deserving of success. Thank you, Camp Spring Creek, for everything you’ve done for my son and for all the families you continue to serve!
We sent our son to this camp last summer with very high hopes. He was diagnosed with a learning difference in 2nd grade and we were looking for a supportive, confidence-building environment. Unfortunately, our experience was very disappointing. Several activities felt inappropriate and, according to our son, not truly voluntary. One example was a “food challenge” where campers were expected to eat extremely unpleasant items. Our son became physically sick, and he reported that others in his cabin did as well. We had specifically asked in advance whether this activity was optional and were told that it was. Campers were also required to do cleaning tasks that felt excessive, including scrubbing toilets and cleaning a bus that reportedly contained mouse droppings. We absolutely believe in kids sharing responsibility, but this went beyond what we consider reasonable. Food policies were also rigid. Campers were required to take (and finish) every food offered and were made to sit until they did so. For children who already struggle with anxiety and confidence, this approach was not helpful. Communication with families was limited. During a six-week session we sometimes went two weeks without hearing from our son. At drop-off, parents were not permitted to see the living or learning spaces, which made it difficult to feel comfortable as first-time camp families. Most concerning, when we picked up our son a staff member discussed his academic struggles in front of him, which undermined his confidence. For a camp whose mission is to support children with learning differences, this was especially troubling. We had hoped this would be a positive, confidence-building experience. Instead, it had the opposite effect for our child. I would encourage other families to ask very detailed questions and consider whether this environment is the right fit for their child.
Where do I even begin? We have had two kids with dyslexia both of whom attended Camp Spring Creek so we have had a decade of experience with Susie and the team. Calling Camp Spring Creek just a "summer camp" feels like a massive understatement. This place is a magical, life-changing haven for children with dyslexia and related learning differences. From the moment you connect with them, you sense the dedication, expertise, and genuine warmth that permeates everything they do. The core of their success lies in the brilliant integration of intensive, research-based academic support with the pure joy and camaraderie of a traditional camp experience. The daily, individualized Orton-Gillingham tutoring is phenomenal. The instructors are not just trained; they are passionate, patient, and incredibly skilled at unlocking the potential within each child. We saw tangible progress in reading and spelling, but more importantly, a renewed sense of academic possibility. But Camp Spring Creek understands that learning doesn't just happen at a desk. They masterfully weave this structured literacy instruction into a day filled with classic summer fun – swimming, hiking, arts and crafts, campfires, and games. This blend is crucial. It allows kids to build confidence, forge deep friendships with peers who understand their journey, and simply be kids in a supportive, judgment-free environment. The pressure and frustration often felt in traditional school settings melt away, replaced by laughter, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. The staff are the true heart and soul of the camp. Their energy, compassion, and commitment are palpable. They create a nurturing atmosphere where campers feel safe, understood, and celebrated for their strengths. They don't just teach; they mentor, encourage, and inspire. Perhaps the most profound impact we witnessed was the incredible boost in self-esteem and confidence. Seeing your child return not just with improved academic skills, but with their head held higher, more willing to take risks, and understanding they are bright and capable – that's priceless. Camp Spring Creek gives these wonderful kids the tools they need to succeed academically and the self-belief they need to thrive in all aspects of life. If you have a child with dyslexia, I cannot recommend Camp Spring Creek highly enough. It's far more than a camp; it's an investment in your child's future, their happiness, and their fundamental belief in themselves. It's an absolutely exceptional program that delivers remarkable results, both academically and emotionally. A truly five-star experience!
When I discovered my son was dyslexic, I quickly found Camp Spring Creek in my quest for information and resources. Barely 8 at the time, I recognized the need to start mitigating and develop strategies for success. Dyslexia can really impact a kid's confidence, and the "summer slide" can have an even more significant impact. Enter Camp Spring Creek where kids learn they are not alone in their neurodivergence, and, in fact, dyslexia is a superpower! The individual care and attention from all of the staff and counselors play an important role in growing confidence and reading test scores - true growth! The tutors are excellent and become a trusted partner of every camper. Outside of reading, the activities are a highlight: woodshop, pottery, sewing, glassblowing, swimming, camping and more. Each contributes to increasing confidence. The food is fresh and well balanced, with manners reinforced (and the kid's appreciate it!). From the first summer, my son returned from camp with the understanding of how to advocate for what he needs. We have returned for many summers, with his sister now also attending. Camp Spring Creek delivers academic success in a fun, sleep-away camp environment. I have endless appreciation for the partnership my family has with Susie and the entire team.
My son attended Camp Spring creek for 2 years in a row and I wish I had sent him sooner. The impression it made on him is incalculable. It was a life changer for him in terms of his dyslexic attributes. He left camp with a confidence he lacked and an entire support system that help him still today. He was so relieved to be amongst other kids in a similar situation to him with regards to how they learn. He also matured in ways he never would have without have that experience on his own. He came home with manners he didn't have when he arrived there, and a respect for things he hadn't really thought of before. He had the time of his of his life there! It is a perfect blend of fun and work and he made lifelong friends. We feel part of the Spring creek Family and can't overstate the impact they had on my son's life and the whole family. Thank you CSC!
